I am addicted to this game..although hindered by a pathetic isp/internet connection which seem the screen freezing for 10 seconds or mire sometimes ( Australian Wet knotted string technology!)
Currently i have discovered 9 islands....2 of which are polar climate and impossible to land on due to the land steepness. My base island has no caves from what i can determine.. ..and is suffering a shark plague..i encounter 10 or more in packs every time i leave my home port.
Some of the scenery shots are amazing. Although i am having difficulty in obtaining some raw materials/ores ..and find strange objects hovering in the air or on the ground that have no explanation, i am persisting to see what eventuates as the game progresses.
I have brought back to my base island all sorts of trees and plants, and made it a routine of replanting the seeds whenever i remove a tree, and the island is becoming quite a forest! I am also filling in depleted mines and re-vegetating them. There s is a massive rock mountain which i hope to flatten..and use the stone to build a bridge to another nearby island for when i build cars.
If i don't get terminated by some bug or misfortune, this game will go on for as long as i can survive.
Very enjoyable game and, a great way to spend time on a computer when the weather is miserable outdoors!
Only wish is the avatars are a bit too basic ...but then ..who knows what the developers have hidden up their sleeves for the future!

There were storms in Eastern Australia. today, and my ISP connection dropped out while i was in Ylands, and on my ship exploring. It happened when i had released the controls and was consulting my map. When i logged back in...i found my avatar in the ocean with the map in hand, and my ship sailing off into the distance!
I Tried swimming after it only to see it outpace me and disappear .... while my health deteriorated...
I was about to give up and start a new game, when i saw the ship reappear ...and it had stopped.. i continued swimming, and despite down to 2 hearts, i managed to catch up ... i was lucky! my ship had run into a Yland and beached itself

For once, there were no sharks around and i recovered my ship, and after a feed and warming up, managed to reverse off the beach and continue my exploration.
So if you release controls whilst the ship is under full power, and your isp connection drops out, you might end up training for the 2020 Olympic swimming team!
Also if you decide to quit the game for a "break", lower the sails and drop anchor as a precaution.
Hope this information is helpful.

Once again encountered "porous" materials. the glass panels for my roof of my ship allow water/snow etc to penetrate. This is really no big deal , but with the latest change where you cannot light fires outdoors during rain etc, i encountered blizzard conditions while sailing, and as it was getting cold I tried to light 2 braziers on the ship deck. However the snow was passing through the roof..and the braziers acted as though they were "outside" and would not light.
Also spotted a "Sharkballoon" ...?? most likely a shark suffering from gas..and floating near the summit of a mountain! I hope they do not learn to dive-bomb!

Sharks finally get the point!
Fitted a few extra spikes to the stern, and some facing to the sides. Did not take long for the sharks to try their luck ... 4 moved in ... 2 were spotted upside down drifting away in my wake . the other 2 declined the offer to try to get on board.
Sailed in a loop and during map consultations and snack could hear shark noises.. but investigation revealed they were milling around behind the ship and after an inspection, swam away.
Ship feels safer now
Fitting a couple of braziers to keep warm ... ran into a ocean blizzard and nearly froze!

When exploring, besides having a long range weapon ( crossbow, rifle etc., and a short range weapon ( spear, sabre) always carry an axe, spade and hammer and repair kit. This can be helpful in rescuing yourself if you get caught in one of the instances of getting stuck and being unable to become unstuck. The repair kit will save you if your axe/hammer/spade breaks.
I needed the spade to dig out my grounded ship ...and another time after using a ladder on an abandoned fort i became stuck in the brick wall. Several hours with a hammer i managed to break out.
When jumping aboard your ship or on the front of your ship, be careful around the bow area. There is obviously an area there that contains collision scripts that allows the ship to detect objects in front of it. If your avatar hits one of these areas you end up being tossed skywards higher than the mast..and falling back to die either on the front deck ...with half your belongings on the deck and the other half with the sharks on the sea bottom.
Whenever you see feathers, or a seagull or ostrich that's in a position for you harvest, gather their feathers .. they are needed for arrows and crossbow bolts. The feathers can be a hard to get resource.. and once you collect them they do not regenerate... so grab them when you see them.
A mining helmet is ideal to craft asap ... you need copper glass to make a flashlight first ... but the helmet gives you hands free lighting...useful if caught outside and there's predators around and you need to carry a weapon.

Success! Shark barrier worked! Fitted a barrier of horizontal iron spikes to stern of ship, and went for a short trip. Friendly sharks soon rushed to greet me
...as soon as i released the ships controls and looked at my map ..i heard a "thud" //turned around to see an upturned shark drifting in my wake ...
Decide to have a snack and another 2 sharks came in behind my ship .. another thud and one ended up upside down and drifting away ...the other shark lost interest!
This screenshot is of the stern of the S.S, Ridiculous with some more spikes added for extra security

The worry is that when the shark dies, it suddenly de-stabilizes your ship until you remove it .. and your ship cannot move until its removed!
The sharks get stuck on your ship ... and it would be a solution to the issue if they did not do this. I have had them try to attack me on the shoreline and beaching themselves. You end up with all these sharks "floating" above the water around your Yland.
It sure makes the game a challenge!

S.S. Ridiculous made it home safely after a grand tour, and was docked with 4 sharks sticking out of its superstructure. I discovered not to kill off the stuck sharks in inhospitable areas or at sea, because as soon as the shark "dies", the corpse assumes weight and overbalances your ship. You then cannot move the ship until either the corpse disappears after a day, or you gut it...which is dangerous as the ship will right itself and there's the possibility you will get tossed into the ocean amidst other sharks waiting for a snack.
Even so, after ridding the hull of the sharks i brought home my ship ended up in a funny angle in the dock as it righted itself after each corpse removal, and the local sharks turned up en masse to seek revenge!
So the walkway at waterline around the ship does work... in a fashion. Sharks will get stuck on it or in it, but they don't seem to be able to get onto the deck and maul you.
Now when building your ship, make sure the helm is not close to the stern, and any sleeping equipment is placed on the ships center and ahead of the helm. Also build a horizontal waterline walkway around the stern so the sharks cannot get too close to you.
I might experiment with outward facing metal spikes on the stern walkway ... and modify the ships bow with some sort of walkway ...like a landing craft.
-
actually, you can see another "air-shark" in the background...altogether i located 5 of them either o on the surface, or suffering from gas and floating just above the water
-
The S.S Ridiculous seems to be a success. As clumsy and slow as it is, the additional walkway at the waterline around the stern keeps sharks (it seems) from climbing aboard underneath the deck.
The sharks still attack, but they are kept at a safe distance from your rear end

Now all i have to do is reverse the ship up to a pier etc and then spear the shark from the safety of dry land.
Once one shark becomes airborne like this it seems to infect other sharks in the area and see them floating on the surface adjacent to or on the beaches where they lurk.
so fellow seafarers, if you construct a waterline horizontal barrier around the stern of your ship , it seems it can reduce the incident of sharks trying to get on board without buying a ticket

-
This is my dock area, with twin bays for mooring and modifying ships ... thats my base in the background, and to the right you can see the flax plantation. The 3 palm trees are an aid to navigation
Note the horizontal barricade/walkway around the S.S. Ridiculous ..its intention is to prevent sharks getting on board.
-
If you can build a base on the shoreline, the better. Chose a bay with navigable waters close in and using stone panels construct a floor to the waters edge, then build up your walls and ceiling. As soon as possible , build a strong door at each exit to keep out predators a,d other animals like goats rabbits crabs etc that will wander in and interrupt your sleep. Put in an internal staircase to a 2nd level ..and put up a tower and decorate it with lanterns ...it will help you locate your base should you get caught outside in bad light.
Extend your pier out to navigable waters... and on 2 levels ...one at ship deck height so you can build and avoid sharks ...and another at the other side of your ship at sea level ..to make a U shaped dock .. so you have some means to scramble to safety if you accidentally fall into the water and there are sharks around.
I found it helpful to put a barrier around the side of your ship ..and use container/boxes ... that way it gives you some guidance not to fall overboard..and you have places to store needed things and stuff obtained form other islands.
It is wise to put on your ship spare tools and materials on your ship to do repairs.. once after having a snack i accidentally clicked the mouse button too often and punched the helm of my ship ...destroying it! Luckily I managed to swim ashore ..and return via a raft with materials to re build the helm. Needless to say i was pursued by sharks both times!
Its best to not start on building a ship until after you have your base built and secured... i would gather up all the flax/cotton i came across and planted it near my base, harvesting it to get more seed and expanding the plantation. By the time you are ready to build your ship you will have enough flax/cotton to build more than enough cloth for sails etc

8 hours ago, Eriugam said:Hi all,
Is anyone having issues with sharks not moving from beaches?
I have built a base near sand and the sharks are congregated in the water and won't move.
@Eriugam ...yes! They will watch me while i am building on the shoreline ...sometimes 3 of them! What you can do is lure them in closer, then use dirt deposited around and behind them to trap them ... build a dirt bridge out to them then get a spear and slaughter them one at a time and collect the fish meat

I have my base built on the shoreline with a two level pier stretching out to navigable waters. I had to place a land barricade around the area where my bed is because they would come in close to the shoreline and try to get under my room and interrupt my beauty sleep

The seem to be attracted as soon as you lay the keel of a ship, and when you are on a ship and release the controls to look at your map or feed.
I have built a marble "curtain" around the stern of my ship ..with horizontal projections ..it seems to be keeping them away, and the projections might make the ship clumsy looking but at sea level they assist in exiting/boarding your ship when exploring other islands.
I missed out the opportunity to take a funny pic of 5 sharks lined on the shore watching me ... it looked like i was conducting a " shark chorus line "

S.S Ridiculous made its maiden voyage ..still needs finishing but appears to be successful .. ( touch wood!)
Was trailed by at least 6 sharks and despite their threatening noises...non tried to come aboard.
Only issue was i got caught in an uncharted shoal and got stuck and spent a couple of hours digging the ship out and spearing sharks who knew i was in the water and came form every direction... Nevertheless i had a good supply of shark meat to feed on

got some more cosmetic - and mod- work to do on the ship

Well... i havent seen any pink elephants etc., but its worrying when you are digging up ore, and know there's wolves around, but surrounded by stampeding boars running back and forth around you ...
Maybe the issue was internet related.... sometimes i think i am connected to the www by lengths of knotted wet string put up by a drunken spider

Got my new ship ...s.s ridiculous ready for a shark test... hopefully i don't lose this one by those finned hijackers...

-
Wow ..did you guys do anything... like add "hare" restorer ...or give the boars a shot of adrenaline?
went to that suspect area today and the rabbits have gone mad .there's a plague! - and the boars were leaping off cliffs over my head and travelling in packs like you see migrating animals!
Even had a friendly shark smiling at me at the waters edge!
This is a strange yland i am on...i cannot find a cave entrance anywhere, but i suspect i will discover a cave while digging for ore.
So ... Digging carefully.... with spear handy..

Perhaps we all should smile at the developers and bat our eyelids...
... they might oblige ... at as they aleady have a lot to do, give them time.
Hmmm sharks can rotate through 45 degrees

-
Ok there are suggestions for more female clothing... a compass
How about... A harpoon gun for dealing with sharks?
Gangplank that's movable for boarding / leaving moored ships
With the new colors, how about stained glass windows?
Thin iron/steel panels for cladding or building....
Ability to rotate panels etc 45 degrees?
curved pathways/roadways ..that is, panels that are shaped like segments of a circle/annulus that can be rotated to form curves..
I am sure to think up more stuff to annoy the developers with

Maybe we could drop potato grenades or dynamite overboard wrapped in shark bait?
It seems that wood is the material the sharks can penetrate easily .. they came in through the side wood panels of my ship ..and one tried over the bow...which was wood and not coated with another material..... ???

Also ..finding bugs and reporting them helps the game develop ...more so than those who ignore the bugs and complain to themselves.
This game is enjoyable and has potential ...... the more enjoyable it becomes through the swatting of bugs, then the potential will develop quicker and further.
We need sharks with friendlier smiles

some survival tips for newbies

You will find shark hotspots....i have located one sth west of my base and sharks spawn en masse there. However my new ship, the S.S. Ridiculous is now passing through that area unharmed, the defense barrier proving effective. The first screenshot shows what i have done, and if i ever rebuild the ship, the rear panels would be sloped, so that shark corpses can slide off. As to effectiveness, check the next two screen shots ...a total of 15 sharks tried to take a bite ..but failed...
So to survive these aggressive sharks ... this is one possible solution.
