they seem to attack whenever you release controls to eat ...and if you are carrying food such as meat slices, they must smell it and go into a frenzy! I am in explore mode... i use my ship to gather resources form other islands, thats why all the storage boxes around the front...
Somehow i think these sharks are just a fun thing for the developers :-) ..its their quirky sense of humor ;-0
Its also possible the sharks dont like my dress code ;-0

ok took the s.s. sharknado for a spin around the island.... had a couple try to get on board but they apparently do not like some panels and flooring! They followed the ship, and would try an attack whenever i released the controls to snack. When moored afterwards there were 4 sharks under the pier and ship making noises. in the last picture ..note the beached sharks that were trying to molest me when i was gathering sand.
As you can see i moved the helm forward so its not close to the area the sharks usually attack from .. and the floor area and side panels are stone and glass.. theres also a "stone" curtain across the stern just above water level.
seems to have thwarted them ..will find out on a longer journey later today

Goat problem solved ....came out to my pier and there were 3 sharks hiding under the boat..making those funny shark noises...and no goat. I think the goat might have fallen off the deck and perished.
You have to hand it to the developers... those noises the sharks make are appropriate and funny. - Its concerning when you release the boat controls ..look at your map and hear that 'gloph-gloph" sound and move the camera view back and see a shark head sticking up through the deck trying to bite your backside!

Those sharks can be a nuisance! The seem to be able to pass through the floorboards/deck of your ship to try and make a meal of you. I built a glass cage around the helm area to stop them it kind of worked, but they came up through the wooden floor! But i notice they will not pass through stone panels. I am currently building a ship with the helm further forward..so the sharks cannot get me from behind ...and i have enclosed the stern in glass windows with a roof..and lined the deck with stone paneling.
Will be testing it today to see if it works.
Hmm land sharks? musty have been put there by a sharknado, a new weather system :-)
I get the sharks following me around the shoreline.... and when collecting sand for glass they will almost beach themselves .... sometimes 5 are waiting. Usually you might find a predator lurking nearby waiting to attack and force you into the water.
For fun, try depositing dirt under the watching sharks, and when they are "up in the air" and stranded ... build a dirt bridge to them and spear them to death :-). Makes an amusing scene :-)

My first go at ylands gave me the impression of " well, its passable , looks like fun...lets see where it goes"... but i soon got hooked!
Now we have weather. So your first priority now is to build shelter... those lightning bolts look dangerous!
Also now, your fire will not stay alight if its out in the rain... no fire ..no light ...and there's wolves etc outdoor! I had one sitting alongside my camp watching me..waiting for daylight. Luckily i had crafted a wooden spear and survived.
When you try to sleep, you cannot if there's danger... you get the message "not safe to sleep here". The danger can be from sleeping in a iron bed near an window during a storm ., that lightning looks scary!. Or there could be a ferocious animal nearby... well not quite..i have been woken up by rabbits coming in through under a wire gate...and once i was woken and couldn't sleep ...until i found a crab hiding under my bed. ( crab meat was delicious! ... it helps you sleep too :-) )
Ahh these ylands developers .. they sure have some humor!
My current challenge is a goat that has strayed onto my ship and camped near the helm . making it difficult to operate the ship. It wont leave..i have tried using hay to entice it off the ship .. with no success. looks like i might have to resort to more drastic measures and provide a goat skin for my tanning rack.
Oh and here's a hint ..if you craft a crossbow and crossbow bolts, don't carry all your ammo with you. I have a spare crossbow and some bolts in storage (with a spear) that i can retrieve from my camp should i get mauled by a wolf/puma/bear/leopard etc. After respawning, I can race back to my camp and re-arm with a crossbow or other long range weapon and after locating my corpse, deal with the nasty beast from a distance, if its waiting nearby for another go at you.
Sharks don't like stone panels, it seems they will follow but unlike woden floors they have not yet penetrated one...and also i notice the sharks will harass you if you are carrying meat on yourself or in a container on your boat.. and usually attack when you release the controls to eat or consult your map.
The latest addition of having to re-load the fires etc in the smelters and forges is another great touch ... makes the game more interesting
I wonder what else they developers have planned? Their sneak peeks are intriguing...
another tip ..place a spear and some flints and wood pieces and an axe in a container adjacent to or re-spawn location ;-)

No worries :-) we forgive you ! But i don't like the way all those sharks seem to follow me around the shoreline...or hide under the pier my boat is moored against. Makes me very conscious of where i put my feet ;-)
-
Doh ;-) yup that worked .... was this something new in the steam update/.change? First time i encountered it.
Thanks for the help and response ... i learn something new each day ... :-)

Note this has now affected the glass station, the smelter, the foundry and the Charcoal furnace ...all around the same time. I suspect the same willl happen to the stove and foundry when they extinguish

No change..
All workstations show as "empty ... " instead of unlit. There's no LMB interaction to light them. its not my mouse as other LMB operations work.. just even though equipped with a lighter... there's no way to light the workstation... its like the script in it has not loaded or failed
-
ok waited to see if t was an internet thing.. re logged and tried again... seems all workstations requiring to be lit show as "empty" instead of unlit...and the lighting function does not work. The work stations suddenly have no contents visible through the grates... they contain items to be crafted which cannot be removed...and show the "workstation full" display if you try to access them . destroying the workstation and re crafting it produces the same result ...an "empty" workstation".
-
Re- logged ..it shows "empty glass forming ..." and it contains items to be crafted but will not light. Now the smelter is titled "empty smelter" yet has items waiting to be v crafted ..it too will not light. The foundry could be l lt ...so could the stove and the forge.. but the charcoal oven now has the same unable to light issue.. I have tried crafting and using new flint lighters..
I have dumped everything out of inventory, but still no difference . cannto take things from the workstation...and it will not light
Any suggestions?
-
Hi .. just recently my glass forming station refuses to light... and also refuses to allow whats crafted to be taken. I have space in my inventory, so thats not the issue.
Four times i have destroyed and re-crafted the station, and still the issues... also re-logged.
Re- j logging now to see if the problem is transient or still there.

I have explored and found desert ylands, cold ylands with snow blizzards, temperate forests and also tropical ylands ... hmmm so would it be possible to add an "aussie" style yland, with Kangaroos... and emus ( look like ostriches but not so friendly) ...and of course the cranky nasty predator.. the tasmanian devil ..( doesnt kill people in rl, but it would be a substitute for a wolf) ... also maybe a dingo ( wild dog) or two ;-) Of course you would need cockatoos ... or galahs !
I can envisage other scenarios , for other countries ... with camels etc ;-) ?
Anyway, enjoying the game.
only down side is the avatar is a little too basic, but i guess that will change gradually as the game develops.

Thank you!
Success! ...... uninstalled the old version, and the steam version... re-installed the steam one...and managed to get the log in screen..and the settings with the link button
Thanks for the prompt reply.
Going to call it a night now, and then tomorrow start a new era of exploration :-)

Link account button is missing.
I can open one account and get the "old" ylands etc version 0.5.37830 ,,that's the pre steam account...
The other account which is the steam one has my steam login id at the lower left, and the settings button does no work. There is no image on the screen, just ocean.
-
ok just noticed something... ylands account is 'kimbuck" but on Steam its grabbed the steam account " kimandina1" and displays it on the bottom left of screen ..maybe this is the issue? if so how can we fix it ?

Help! suffering ylands withdrawal symptoms!
Received key, added game and entered key. all seemed ok no issues apparent, accepted the key and said game activated. no difference from usual. Could launch game through steam, however Couldn't find link window in setting, justt a redeem code button.
Today, Another game "ylands " appeared in games list ..clicked on it and got a message installing steam version. Waited and waited, eventually it said loaded. Opened game to run it and got screen with no avatar etc and no access to existing games... settings button does not work, but news etc buttons do . Clicked on continue ... and get a screen with no island or avatar and a blank square. so went back and tried a new game option... got a square saying workshop unavailable etc. Tried clicking on a scenario and got a blank screen with the messages "breeding hogs etc ... cycling through repeatedly and no progress. Tried a re-install, no further progress... tells me that the key is already linked to a game. Took screenshots but cannot locate them anywhere.
Help! ? before i descend into the depths of despair :-)

I can confirm the "stuck in the wheel" issue ....i found if i clicked back on the helm control, the wait, then release control and step back, you can escape. I also found if you have restricted space behind your helm ( ie storage boxes) that could cause the issue.
-
An additional thought ..... when map is opened, perhaps a x or something to indicate where you are on the map..?? just the island outline is not enough to help you get your bearings.
-
I believe someone already suggested a compass.. That would be an excellent addition, especially if it was included on the map with n.s.e.w. references... as it is currently easy to sail in circles.
My thoughts is that the compass could be crafted via .. 1 ingot, 1 raw glass, any hammer and a screwdriver.
If a tiny floating window displaying the compass.. and your bearing appeared in the corner of screen while sailing it would be a great help in finding your way home. This would be linked to having a map, of course

Discovered this game by accident after becoming tired of other mmrp games where griefers and cheats ruin it. Its so frustrating to arrive as a new player only to be continually set upon by groups who wait around simply to attack and destroy the creations of others who have not advanced in the game.
I liked the trial game ..so paid up for the game from the store... and have really enjoyed myself. my first 3 islands were disasters... the fourth one i encountered a bug where i kept falling through the earth and died immediately on respawning!
My latest island is more of a success..i have yet to check out the caves, but have located 2 islands with resources ...one had a huge gold vein just inside a cave entrance, and i see on my map at least 3 other islands to visit, if i can avoid those sharks.
hopefully some time soon there will be provision for modding... and improving the avatar appearance.

i can confirm the grave block effect on a ship. It becomes immovable and the ship gets stuck on it. You have to spend time ( avoiding sharks) hitting the block until it breaks, or if you are lucky, move the ship in such a way that the grave block slides off the deck ...where it remains suspended over the ocean.
The same with dead sharks ...sometimes they will slip out through the superstructure and the corpse floats in the air behind the ship. Once i left a trail of six floating corpses in a line behind my ship ...
Also noted that in one case a passing seagull flew into the side of my ship ... and caused the ship to rock violently ... it eventually slid along the ship side then when cleared it and flew on its way and the ship returned to normal movement
By the way, i am enjoying this game. looking forward to more developments etc Its a great way to spend a day inside when the weather is wintry outside.

Anyone else with a shark problem?

disaster! s s Sharknado drifting aimlessly without captain, victim of multiple shark attack through floor of ship. Captains corpse last seen sinking in open seas to titanic depths. Anyone finding an abandoned ship laden with ores and weapons... please return to me !! hahah..
oh well another start... ;-) At east i managed to get that bear that tried to climb aboard my ship earlier. yes an amphibious and tried to scramble aboard bear attack ...it was lurking in the water..( probably wearing bear scuba apparatus ) and tried to scramble aboard as i was moving into the shore. it pays to have a spear positioned near your mast where you can grab it easily
