    Dev Diary #26

Very nice list. I see a lot of items from my own list addressed. Except one that I thought might make it to 0.7: Protective Barrier - protect from terrain edits. Protective Barrier - added to the editor so that custom MP maps can provide protection too.

Mobile Base (masts set in edit mode)

Interesting. It reminds me of the some of the old Chinese "floating fortress" ships. Ref:

    Possible to build a catamaran?

You could try a catamaran using the ship as the central hull and then craft side hulls attached to it (technically a trimaran). I've seen a version of one but the side hulls were too small imo. Shameless plug: I made a trimaran using the boat:
  4. This is like the other 503 fatal login error others were getting, but it's a 401 for me. I have not had any login issues in the past. output_log.txt output_log_clean.txt

RESOLVED Fatal Login Error 401: Can't Login

I tried twice just to be sure... worked both times. Thank you.
  6. This has happened to me twice now (I know it's been discussed) on MP servers... logging in again the next day and having to start a new character, even though your other character is still alive and well. Kind of feels weird to kill my doppleganger to retrieve my inventory.

RESOLVED Fatal Login Error 401: Can't Login

I just tried, no luck. I tried 3x. Launching from windows, launching from steam app, then relogging into steam and trying again. None worked.

RESOLVED Fatal login error code 503

Edit: Nevermind, I'm starting a new thread since it's a different error code for me...

    My game can´t start.

I'm having the same issue, oddly enough a 401 error. This is the first time I've encountered this. Ylands starts the launch process then this appears on the main screen.

    Forum improvements

    1. The color of the text in the title field does not contrast enough with the white background. 2. This little notice below that is constantly appearing in the text box just tends to get in the way, esp when trying to make a small edit. I don't think we need it, pretty much everyone knows that the text box is for entering text and the toolbar options are right there.
  11. Please include the following information in your server name so that when users are browsing the MP list in Ylands, they can find a server more relevant to what they are looking for: 1. Include the location of your server. Filter by region is not good enough. For example, the distance between NYC and L.A. is 2800 miles so there is a difference in performance based on proximity. I can't rely on the region filter alone for the best possible connection. It's easy enough for example to include NYC or L.A. within your server name, or perhaps something like "West Coast" or "US West" for example. 2. Indicate that your server is dedicated. I think the abbreviation "dedi" is fairly known. Also, please stop and start your server at least once every 24 hours. I have found some servers that were running great at first and then slowly start to degrade with lots of freezing, item bugs, and skipped frames (esp at sea while on a ship or boat). You may also consider taking the server offline and removing the dead bodies of players that have not returned, especially at spawn as this seems to greatly delay logging in which also lags the server for all players. Also consider replenishing core mats (clay, iron, cotton/flax) on the starter island, a lack of these items will often send people away. I'm not trying to tell you what to do with your server, but given the current state of the dedicated game, the odds are already stacked against you. If you do these few things then you will probably have a more successful public server.

If you run a dedicated public server...

They can't be removed within a game session, not even when using the Annihilator tool. However, they can be removed using the editor. I will note though that it's not obvious at first because when you click to select a corpse, nothing happens leading one to believe it cant be edited. It's the lower legs of the corpse that can be clicked to select the body. You can also drag a selector box around the area of the corpse to select it, then delete it, then save it and relaunch the server. The fact that bodies can't be remove in-game is an issue for a few reasons: 1. They cause lag. 2. They prevent placing block where the body lays. Some people will intentionally get themselves killed inside someones base just to troll the base owner. The base owner, wanting to build at the spot of the corpse, will sometimes dig down to try and get rid of the body but this causes terrain issues and unless the ground is covered with panels or something, this wont work. 3. If the base owner can get the body hidden under panels, then that's a body that the admin cant see to remove during a clean up. Even if the base owner does not need to build on that spot, it's still annoying to see dead bodies in your base... forever. In an ideal world, the body should only persists for maybe 5 minutes and then the server should remove it, I'd like to see the same thing happen with junk items, like wood chunks and bark for example that often are left on the ground after chopping down a tree. With a standard Explore map used for MP, it can be impossible to find all bodies on all islands. But at the very least, a server admin can remove the bodies at spawn and look around the starter island for more as this is where most of them will be.

    Memory problem?

Is the Ram Drive still a feature of Windows? I recall that in earlier versions of Windows, if there was not enough ram to handle functions, then windows would create a virtual ram drive on the HD. This meant slower performance of course. There was even an option to set the allocated space for the virtual ram drive. Perhaps this is what's happening in your case; you need more ram to run Ylands so Windows is compensating with a virtual ram on your disk... this would explain why you are getting a lot of r/w from the drive and why your SSD has helped you.

Editor is almost unusable at the moment

@zarwil Odd. I've used the editor quite a bit and have not encountered bugged blocks or paint. There are a number of improvements I'd like to see with the editor but the only editor bugs I've seen so far involves stacking items and an occasional issue with mapping a spawn point to a role. Aside from the editor, I do encounter a lot of in-game bugs and I know how frustrating it can be to lose something you've spent a lot of time working on. For that I'd suggest making frequent backup copies of your game saves so that in the event there is an issue, you can roll back to a previous save. You may have to rebuild whatever you built after that save, but it's a lot better than losing it all.

    Memory problem?

I think you mentioned this once before as a bug...? When I run windows monitor to view on a second screen while playing Ylands, I get very little HD read/write action at all and it literally never reaches 100% while playing (I reserve my SSD for boot and windows only, with a few exceptions). The only thing that has ever peaked for me while playing Ylands was my CPU. Ref Ylands file size. I only have one single player .ylandsgame save file currently (deleted older saves) and it's only 5,793kb. However I have also only visited the starter island. I'm guessing that the details of islands are not saved to the session file until revealed through proximity and that a larger starting island would result in a larger save. In my sample, I'm guessing that a single file with one exposed island being 6mb could reach 20mb after additional islands were found. I have a scenario map that I've been working on, it is a dual island with each island being about twice the size of a typical "Explore" 4.5m (I measure island size by how long it takes to fly around it using prop pack with 4.5m being 4.5 minutes for a standard starter island) so with two side by side islands at 8m each, that unexplored save file is 17mb. The screenshot below shows disk usage. The peak you see to the left of the graph is loading (and generating) a new Explore world. Once the world is loaded, disk usage drops a lot (this is a gaming laptop btw). During game play, assuming Ylands is the only thing running, HD use varies from between 0% - 1%. Can you post your .ylandsgame test file? I want to see if your save game is triggering the constant (peaking?) HD state that yours is on your PC.

    Cheaters?

A Farley file is fine but in this case, there is the option to use any name you wish when joining a new server so I suspect that trolls will mask their public community name with an alt name when joining a new server. For example I doubt that "Shows", the guy that griefed my PB base will be a name seen often. As for moderation, it's very difficult in the current state of the MP game. Owners have very few tools, they can basically kick and ban. I don't even know if there is a warp ability but if the default survival map is the only option for MP with ... 16 islands? Then without warp that's a lot of places for players to hide after griefing. There's also no server forum here for people to discuss the servers. I hate to admit this but no matter how many of us just want to build and create there will always be those that simply want to destroy for the purpose of causing grief. Some games attract grief and let's face facts here, Ylands MP is currently a full loot PvP game. Hopefully there will be some fixes to MP and adding the BP to the editor will allow for server owners to generate their own server maps and with this there is the ability to assign death penalties (using the Roles function). For example you can set to allow a respawn with all items in inventory and equipped. But if the PB is never added to the editor and the game is forever locked into default survivor for MP then I don't think MP will ever be anything more than a few friends cooperating. It's the exploits that will ruin MP long before the cheaters though. Currently, no ship is safe, any ship, under any circumstances (except for flipped), can be stolen, in less than 60 seconds. In the same amount of time, a ship can be rendered useless, just dump a bunch of dirt under it. It takes just a few hits with a stone hammer to destroy a locked helm and then replace it with a helm of your own. Dirt can be used to move a person from the safety of their PB, so that they can be killed to take all of their stuff. An entire base can be ruined with a spade, or a shovel with very little time or effort. What took days to build can be ruined in minutes. Players can logout within your PB thus blocking you from building and if you kill them, then you get to stare at a dead body on your door step for apparently forever (do the bodies ever despawn?). Or someone could create a character with a rude name, run to your base, and die on your doorstep intentionally, never intending to play, but just wanting to grief your base with his dead body... the guy I killed that griefed my base, he is still there, his dead body still trolling me and since you only get one PB, I cant just start over, I'm stuck. And as admitted by CowaBunga himself in a Steam thread about spawn killing, it's faster to kill other players and take their stuff than to collect what you need. What is more important that dealing with cheaters though (imo) is to fix the PB so that it does not allow editing the terrain, and place the PB as an item in the editor so that server owners can generate a server map to include a broken (or fixed) PB when they spawn into the world and make locked ship helms useful. These few things would give so much more control to server owners and players and help against griefing. @gazig1 I could be wrong but I don't see anyone else accusing you other than Cowa. Cowa has prompted the discussion and followups here to cheating as a topic are not necessarily a followup or an agreement to the accusation made against you.

    Tides..and tidal influences?

I like the idea of tides. I'm especially fond of the ocean when it's storming because the waves gain height. Would love to see storm levels with corresponding oceanic effects.

    Just broke the hill !!

It's precarious for sure. I found the following to work, in this order: 1. remove 2. flatten 3. smooth the perimeter of flattened area In fact, it tends to be easier to work with if you just use flatten and then smooth out ignoring the remove function because flatten will remove too depending on the level you aim at.
  23. As the title reads, what happens if you jump off your ship while in motion and you can't reach it and it just keeps sailing off... on a server? How will this effect lag?

    Cheaters?

Yes, cheaters. Cheaters able to open containers through walls too, or they are removing the walls (stone panels) and then replacing them. Someone hit my base in the water, used dirt to make a lift to reach it, and then emptied out my container that was inside a stone building, with no doors and no openings, took all my clay and my cotton of which there does not seem to be any left on the starter island, all of this was within my activated PB. I've gone through the trouble of stealing my stuff back in the past but when people are going to use cheats, I see no point in playing anymore. In at least one case I found a dedicated server in which the server owner was trolling everyone in a similar fashion. Can't say he was cheating though. But it's a sad state when someone creates a dedicated server for the purpose of trolling. In another case I saw someone completely burying someones base in dirt. There are people that have no interest in the game and just want to grief others and in the current state, it's easy to do that. After playing Public MP servers off and on for a week now, I'm convinced that it's not worth it. The MP aspect is like a very early Alpha version of the game with so much broken and so much to exploit that it's not worth playing with any real goal of achieving anything. It's kind of sad that people are willing to exploit a game. Part of the fun of a game is over coming the challenge, some people can't handle any challenge at all, those people cheat. Edit: I went back to the last server I experienced this on to look around. The guy had grown a large tree on my platform for some reason, when I chopped it down, I was then able to see someone sitting down next to it. He was not in the tree though, just next to it. Maybe he sat on the seed? Anyway, his name was "Shows" which I'm sure he just changes for every server he jumps on. This is why I say that a PB is just a bright beacon that says "come grief this". In MP, you are better off in a hole in the ground with no PB to advertise.

    My Catamaran MK III

@dia13l089 That is a great idea! So I just updated the scenario slightly. This isn't the big update I want but I was able to do this one quickly and I wanted to make sure that the workshop systems works and that I can edit it for revisions, so minor changes first. Those changes include: 1. Made some minor corrections to the catamaran, some items are pickable, some are not. Also some changes to the 2nd boat. 2. The 2nd boat should be visible now to all players with medium settings. I suppose I can't help it much if players are going with custom or low settings. 3. I added lore in the form of letters, one in your inventory, and a "Sun Faded Letter". 4. I added a spot nearby the 2nd boat that can be used to anchor a build. This takes some of the challenge out of it, however new players to the scenario could ignore it, this is hinted at in the Sun Faded Letter. 5. Slight alteration to starting wicker inventory. This means less iron and I added stone chunks. What I want to do is going to take more time but this is what I'm planning: A. There will be three game modes between Easy, Standard, & Hard. This will be determined at character creation and cannot be reversed. There will be several factors in the difficulty including death penalties, starting location, inventory, and how much effort will be needed to get a base started. B. Rather than remove the island as I did in the previous version, I will leave the island on the map as an easter egg. It will be far from spawn though and to find it one will still need to first build a base and a map, and preferable a ship to replace the slow boat. C. Will change the location for more rain and thus heavy seas. This is the part that is delaying me because in order to change the location, I have to start from scratch, that and item B above. But this will definitely add atmosphere and give it that end-of-the-world feeling with lots of rain that has resulted in a flooded world. In some cases it will also make it more difficult, esp before a base with an unmoving foundation is established. D. As you mentioned, I will add areas of interests and supplies/materials in the form of boat sites, but will include some depth sites too. Perhaps some sunken ships, etc... The thing that's killing me is that there is no option to add a protective barrier in the editor so building a base at sea (or anywhere) will be harder to edit.
