    Player creations suggestion

So maybe a special category within the Workshop where you can submit some compositions, then have it be vetted by the BI team to make sure it's in compliance with their requirements and policies, then have the world generator include it as part of its random scenario generation? It'd be nice if the work could be attributed to the player somehow without breaking the immersion. Like maybe just a small plaque on the wall somewhere that you can interact with to see the designer details.

    What was your first videogame?

Magnavox Odyssey home console. An enhanced clone of Atari Pong. First computer game? Lunar Lander on some PDP (8?) mini system. And then again on the Apple II as my first desktop.

    Ships, death and frustration

The devs have asked us to provide additional log files and save game files to help them identify and reproduce the bugs. So yes, they are working on the bugs, but they're doing so with the requested assistance of these players.

    Just some questions..

Ylands is not nearing release. Not sure where you got that impression from. Early Access isn't over until August. There is no in-game mechanism at the moment to prevent PVP. Not sure if it's in the works, but mostly admins are self-enforcing their own servers at the moment. I have a strict no-griefing policy on my server and I don't give second chances if I see anyone breaking the rule. Their account gets banned, no questions asked. Sorry you encountered an asshat on your first foray into the game. We're not all idiots, I promise.
  5. Load the game in to the editor, delete her character, and then have her come back in. If that still doesn't work, create a new game, have her log in to that, fix a barrier generator and drop it on the ground (don't activate it), then load the game into the editor, select the fixed barrier generator and save it as a composition, then load the first game in to the editor and place the composition into the world, then have her log in and activate it.

    Trust no one!

I am definitely against griefing and will ban people who come on the server and wreak havoc like that, but for the most part, there are ways to secure your property from others. The problem is that even with those in place, they can still be hacked off with a hammer and a bit of time. There needs to be a way to harden that further, perhaps with some crafting options. Barriers are also not 100% - sometimes they bug out, or other times even when they work, if you don't place enough buffer material between your precious belongings/space and the barrier itself, thieves can exploit surfaces that are just crossing into the barrier to break through, or they can push first person against your walls and interact with objects on the other side even if they don't break through. Ultimately, I know I can lock the server down with a password and only give it out to those I trust, but it's nice to have new people come on and join the community organically. One way I've thought of controlling that was to only give out the password on Discord to people with authenticated e-mail/phone # Discord accounts, but I feel that would just cause otherwise good players from wasting their time and they'll just go to the next server that doesn't hassle them to get the password. Another solution would be to implement something at the game world level. Perhaps we can define the server as PVE only in the configuration and this allows strict ownership of items and makes everyone invincible. I don't know, something to think about.

    Random Ylandish things

When on the high seas, look around for birds - they only fly around islands. If you want a definitive answer, load the save game in to the editor and use the Go To menu option to see the list of islands and their biomes.

    Got a problem, specifically painting.

In addition to what handofthesly suggestion, you could drop the Creator Cube in to your save game, then you can toggle between Explore/Create simply by equipping or removing the cube from your body.
  9. Possibly - I've seen this type of situation happen multiple times now, sometimes it's because of the Propeller Pack, sometimes it's just some random disassociation with your Barrier after some strange death. In either case, dying and resurrecting usually clears things up, but that's not guaranteed, nor always possible.
  10. Have her try /killme and come back to see if it re-associates her to the protective barrier that should be in her inventory.

    Energy Ideas

Oooh, I like where this is going. Potentiometers that can control electric motors that can be coupled to other objects... Shafts, belts, wheels, propellers, fans, couplers that could be built upon with standard blocks or other objects...

    Game becomes mostly unplayable

OK that's certainly your prerogative. At any rate, glad you had fun - hope you make it back as the game development progresses to see if it becomes more fun for you.

KNOWN ISSUE I am a ghost

I've seen this happen a few times - in every case, a buggy propeller pack was involved. You may have to try killing yourself again with /killme. Try taking the prop pack off if that helps. If it doesn't solve the problem, load the save game into the editor, edit your person's inventory to remove the propeller pack, and then give it another go in-game.

    FPS fall with large structures

Yep, every one of those blocks is adding to the overhead whenever that portion of the map has to be loaded for the player. That said, that track looks awesome! You've inspired me to build a racetrack island of my own...

How much memory does your system have and how much memory is the Ylands process taking up? Just curious if you're exceeding available physical memory and then it's spending the rest of the time swapping to your pagefile on disk. Ylands hasn't been fully optimized yet so it tends to grab memory resources aggressively. If you're familiar with Resource Monitor in Windows, you can go to the Disk tab and find out what file I/O is thrashing the disk. Is it Ylands or something else?

    RESOLVED [YLD-8860] Network Layer Error

Thanks for the update Ane. If you need any volunteers to test the saved game compatibility, let me know. I can spin up additional servers using the saved game that I already provided to your team and have some of our regular players check things out.

Always an even number of Islands?

The editor won't show you a map, but it does let you teleport directly to any of the islands, and you can see from the menu how many there are and what type of biome exists.
  18. Also encountered this, but I'm not able to reproduce on-demand. It's easier to see when you paint the structure/vehicle and then move around it. You'll see the non-painted block flashing through occassionally, and if you remove the painted block in the same place, the non-painted one will remain. This happens more on vehicles than buildings for me in the editor.

Always an even number of Islands?

If you're set on avoiding exploring it on your own, you could simply open the save file in the editor and use the Go To menu to see how many Ylands are available to jump to.

    Exploits?

I run a Dedicated Server and noticed that someone was able to unlock doors that were locked and kill someone who was within their protective barrier (after somehow unlocking their doors). He was able to do this to two different players (that I know of, im still going through backup saves to see what else was done). Now I suppose it's possible that this guy is just lucky and managed to find backup keys that the other players may have hidden (assuming they exist), but that still doesn't explain how he was able to kill someone in their own barrier. Anyone else seeing these potential exploits out in the wild? I have an enforced no-griefing policy, no exceptions rule on my server, so he's banned for now, but if these exploits are out there, I suspect I'll be dealing with others.

    Exploits?

OK, after reviewing my backup files from today, I was able to piece together the chain of events that this guy followed. Aside from the inventory exploit (which I've been able to reproduce), looks like he got into two properties through legitimate break-in techniques. The first one was done by using /freecam at night to scan for vulnerabilities (parts of the floor that touched or crossed through the barrier) and once he located that, he tunneled down, under, and up. The first victim had a spare key in a container that wasn't locked and he robbed the place and unlocked the front door and walked right out. He then took their boat by breaking the anchor which was locked. The second house had no vulnerabilities through the barrier that he could take advantage of, but after casing the joint for a while he finally found a container outside that held backup keys to the house and let himself in the front door. He killed the owner, but it turns out this was not through an exploit but through a bug that had nothing to do with him - the owner's association to the protective barrier was glitched and it did not recognize the owner. I've seen this happen to a handful of people now, not exactly sure what causes it, but usually resets after death and coming back. So, lessons learned: Harden your structures - Don't expand out to touch the barrier boundary, give yourself some buffer space. Don't leave spare keys where someone will find them, or at least keep them far away so if someone does find them, they won't know what they're for. Accept that boats are vulnerable and don't get attached to them - it is a trivial exercise to remove a locked helm or anchor lever and replace it with a new one and keeping a boat in your barrier does nothing to protect it. Finally, make sure your barrier is associated to you - try to deactivate/activate it to confirm it's associated to you and if not, have your server admin give you a new one (they'll have to compose one and bring it in via editor). To the guy who I banned today - nothing personal, I admire your tenacity, but I do have rules on my server. You asked me where they were right before the ban - you already knew where they were since you logged in to the server (sign that you see as soon as you get in), and you logged into my Discord (Pinned message in the channel you enter). If you ignored both of them, well that's no excuse. Either way, no second chances on my server.

    Exploits?

OK, I think opening the doors was done by sheer luck of finding spare keys outside of people's houses, so no exploit there. I'm still not sure how they were able to kill someone within their active barrier, nor can I explain how they were storing general objects in specialized containers. The investigation continues...

    Exploits?

I did some further forensics on what was going on during this reign of terror and I discovered that this player had multiple containers on him that contained regular items of various types. He's a bag full of tricks, that's for sure.

    invisable friends

I've seen this happen as well - usually when it happens, the invisible character can equip the map and you'll at least see the map floating around where the character is.
