Blueprints are fun but dangerous!

Recommended Posts

I pride myself on making compositions that are " Blueprint friendly" but I find it most difficult to build Blueprints that are Server friendly! And whilst Red Eagle and the folks over at P1 are boasting about their many fabulous and megalithic creations that they supposedly built on their own MP Explore servers I can't seem to be able to even build a simple store [See screenshots below] without crashing our own MP Explore server. It's analogous to you being able to fill your swimming pool when I can't even take a bubble bath!  Apparently, the file size is just too big.

For the most part, this build is "Blueprint friendly" ... No, the Pillow and the Cloth Pieces, and all the Stone Chests will not make it through the Blueprint process: I know that but this is part of my private collection! I have not uploaded it to the workshop... and if I ever do, trust me, it will be entirely Blueprint friendly. My point in all of this is that this is not a huge project. It is not megalithic in stature and does not have a huge footprint as compared to all that is supposedly created on the P1 servers...

The ONLY way to bring anything so big onto a public sever is to either import it as a composition entirely [After making certain that everything in it is grouped together.] or to painstakingly build it all by hand in the game. The file sizes are just too big! The server has to track and remember where every single part and piece goes even if it's only a ghost outline that is not yet built. Project Tables don't remember anything on their own. It's all a part of the server operation and that can make a huge impact on an MP Explore Server and it's community.

Blueprints are a great idea.  In practice... meh.   I find myself choosing not to use them because half of the time you get the bug "someone is using this."  Now, you have a workstation that can only be removed in editor, and if you do, you still can't get rid of the ghost.

Prior to the "fix"at least my own blueprints were reliable. Now, I can't even use the ones I made myself.

And you keep making the statement that P1 claims their huge builds are made in game.  I would love to know where you get that information?  You will note, I do have P1 in my name.  I am not a group spokesman, but I am part of the group.  I don't know of an instance where this claim is made.

If you are really familiar with P1, you would know that the building group lives almost exclusively in the editor.  I am one of the few who do build in the game real time.  That's not to say I never use editor, I certainly do.  But P1 is pretty clear that the bulk of builds happen in editor.  We also have a bunch of crazies who do amazing things with logics.

You should hop in to one of our weekly meetings, they are a lot of fun.
