This has been a problem since the 0.10 update, I think. Signs do not show text at night. You might get a brief flash of the text, then nothing. They work well during the day, but not in the dark.
This is a problem for dedicated servers because we often need to convey information, such as discord addresses and server rules. A better option would be if we can eventually have messages in game, but until that is possible, signs are really the only way to communicate with new players.
