You must place a ship helm to "assemble" the ship.

When you assemble the ship it will naturally fall into the water with no problem.

So I'm having some trouble with building my first ship in exploration. I've alt placed the body of the ship, but I've placed it just above the waters surface. I cant dismantle the ship now, only its parts like the ladders. Is it a lost cause trying to get these resources back or am I missing something?
