  1. Hi all, one of the players on my dedicated MP server is missing their protective barrier.  Every time they recreate their avatar, no barrier is included in their inventory which leads me to believe it's somewhere in the world (they don't recall placing it anywhere but they're a new player to the game so maybe they didn't realize it at the time).

Any way for me to help locate or recreate it for them either in-game or through the editor?

EDIT - It was suggested to me by stephenw92 on the Ylands Server Community Discord to have the player log in to another MP server that I control, drop a fixed barrier in the world, then make a composition of it and place in the first world.  Giving it a go now!

Final EDIT - Composition from another MP world for the same player did the trick.

I was talking about dedicated  servers that players rent or make, but I can get on the one I want now

Most likely those dedicated servers haven't been updated by their owners yet.  We had two recent patches this week and the client needs to match the server version for it to be available.

  3. If your json file still shows BuiltIn for the SessionDataType and Explore for the SessionData then every time the game server is started, it will generate a new map.

I'm not sure if it overwrites SessionSave.ylandsgame every time or if it keeps a copy - so check the files in your instance directory to see what you have.  If it's just one copy of SessionSave.ylandsgame, and no other similarly named files, then it's likely overwritten and your progress is gone.  New version 0.7 doesn't generate a new map by the way, it detects the old one and just loads that.

  4. I could move the clone over to your base and kill it for you to see if you can salvage anything off of it, but at this point I'm not sure it's worth trying to play the game going all the way across the globe unless performance is drastically improved with the upcoming patch.  Wish you had a better experience - the server itself is a pretty beefy enterprise rack server with plenty of CPU/Memory and a Gigabit connection to the Internet, but the current state of the game doesn't really take advantage of any of it.  It slows to a snails pace eventually no matter what.

Either way, let me know if you want me to try anything with your avatars on my server.  I'm usually on during my evenings, GMT-5, so not sure if there's a good time for us to coincide on.

My goats fell into the basement.  And multiplied.

Apparently the soil in Ylands is very soft.  I loaded the map into the editor and saw entire populations of animals below the world.  I must've deleted at least a hundred of them from just underneath the initial spawn area.

In order to get my "ylands fix" i  tried another server...   found it ok  but  as it was way overseas  log in times l took ages...  I built a base  but  fell victim to the dreaded falling through the ground glitch and respawned minus  all my  items. I could not locate them,   I found  my base but could not  access all my locked chests  and the  basket with my duplicate keys  was missing...  ????  Also   my PB  would not recognize me ... (I respawned with  no items in inventory whatsoever!)

This must've been my server - I see you have two bodies that aren't dead - one sitting in a base along the coast, and another standing at the spawn point.  At this point, we're just waiting for the next patch before doing anything serious.  Will be wiping and starting fresh.

Hi, Does the diving suit do anything for you other than looking good? I got my boat hung up near an arctic yland, and made a diving suit, but it didn't do much to protect me from the cold

The breathing mask allows for breathing underwater, and the flippers allow for much faster movement underwater.  Those are the only pieces you'll need.  The neoprene suit/pants are for looks.

  8. As we all know, digging into the sand under water causes the water to get all wonky.  I've found that dropping blocks of water (via the Terraformer) onto the area clears the issue up and everything settles down nicely.  After loading the map into the editor, it became apparent that the blocks of water were still in the air above the area I was attempting to fix, so it seems that when you place material down with the terraformer, the game retains that original location even if gravity forced it to disperse below.

Is this intentional?  Does this cause any issues that I haven't run into yet?  From a player perspective, it's non-impacting since the water splashes into the area below and just fills in the space, but I wonder if these extra objects being tracked by the game engine are taking up resources needlessly?

just wanted to make it "perfect" before reporting it and closing it down ... it was possible to escape from it, even now, BUT you do have a point.

I just opened the prison ... leaving it open ;-) you can come for a visit ...

    BUT
I doubt the dev's will fix this anytime soon, it does not have enough "Hate hype" which i hopped for to rise the proper attention to this issue it deserves for a quick fix...

Fair enough - I know the devs have a lot on their list, most of it players aren't privy to so I won't attempt to prioritize it for them, but I think this topic certainly has proven to be a flashpoint so hopefully it gets the necessary attention for a fix.

  10. Ahzzz, you're not helping your case.  Every subsequent post you make only digs a deeper hole.  I suggest you drop it and salvage what you can of the situation and move on.

Bottom line is a brand new player on a server should not be hindered in the way you've shown possible.  Yes, the devs should fix it, yes you've proven your point, no you didn't need to keep the "test" going and "blackmailing" people and forcing them to "prove" anything to you about their character.  That is no longer about executing an idea and proving that it's a problem.  You did that with the first person that encountered it, and it shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone as to what the outcome would have been.

So thanks for making the issue visible for the devs to prioritize, but please stop trying to justify the subsequent behavior.  You're not changing anyone's opinion of you, and in fact, only making it worse.

Spawning in fresh on a new server or dieing at night time and not being able to see or do anything

I've tried to address this on my server by lighting a brazier at the starting point (and leaving some flint lighters around in case it dies out) and having a crafting station right there with some starting supplies for new players to gear up and have a fighting chance without being naked and blind.

I tried the method of putting a starting role on a generated map that starts with a few basic items including a torch, but then you lose out on having a protective barrier orb, and random sites/caves, so that's not ideal.  If we can simply have a custom player role defined on the exploration map, that'd be perfect.

  12. Hey all, been here for a bit but never posted an intro post.

I've been a fan of these open world sandbox construction type games for a while and ran into Ylands about a month ago. I saw a lot of potential and decided to buy a copy and start a dedicated server as well.  My first iteration went well but there'd always be some clown who would come on and ruin everyone's fun, exploiting bugs or just being a general asshat to grief people.  I decided to start over with a private server and so far there's a handful of us on it and it's doing well.  I've also since added regular backups that we can restore from in the event someone or something causes irreparable damage to the world.

In any case, I'd like to open it up to some others who also want to play on this type of server.  Here are some details:

    • 24/7 Dedicated Physical Server with a Gigabit Ethernet connection to the Internet from the US East Coast
    • Backed up every 5 minutes at 2 day retention with daily milestones kept
    • 10 Ylands to explore
    • Plenty of replenished starting resources and crafting stations on starting yland
    • Dedicated Discord Server for General Chat, Announcements, and Issue Reporting - optional use, and voice is not required
    • If we need to regenerate the world, I'll do my best to save and restore any compositions.
    • No griefing - PVP is just not mature enough at this phase of development.  If you guys want to play around and PVP with consent, that's fine, but get permission from all involved first.
    • No exploiting - If you discover an exploit, report it to Bohemia.  Don't use it to make everyone else's time miserable.
    • I use a Creator's Cube to maintain starting resources, terraform the starting yland, and help address issues.  I will not use it to give anyone an unfair advantage.

If the above sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, shoot me a message and I'll get you the server info/password.

    Thanks!

I'm pretty much done with MP unless I can find a good closed group. I was working on building my ship, went out to gather some supplies. When I got back, my ship was a black husk. I didn't even know you could burn them. It's great that the barrier protects my base, but as designed now, it wll never protect the ship.

I have a public 24/7 dedicated server right now, and a Discord set up for it.  It hasn't been getting much use but I keep it around to try things out.  If I can find a good group of people who are serious about keeping a decent environment going, no griefing, no cheating, no BS - I'd consider locking it up and doing something just for that group.  I have full control of the physical server so I back it up on a regular interval and save daily restore points, etc.

Hi yes it was repaired and active. Thanks Kittemz1 that is the answer, i thought it protected your base while you were online i am not sure it explains it too well

in the codex or it might be that i just cant read..Thanks for the help.

It doesn't protect you from PVP combat while you are online, but it's supposed to prevent other players from altering terrain or objects within the cube regardless of you being online or not.  Did you place the blocks down with free placement (V) or did you actually build them in place?  I think there might be a bug with free placing.

I tried several work-arounds but none worked so I had to go with the best option for what I wanted to do, which meant using the editor to generate a custom world for the DS, and no orb.

Thanks Whane, I played around with different things and came to the same conclusion.  Here's hoping that BI adds more flexibility to this aspect in the future.  For now, I'm trying out your suggestion and going with a generated map with some starter items, no drop on death, and a custom spawn/role.  The world isn't as interesting (no caves or random sites), but hopefully the human inhabitants will make up for it with their own creativity, even if griefers can now destroy things without the barrier protection.  I'll just have to take more backups and keep an eye on things.

There is a trade off though, and for some people this is a big factor, when generating a world using the editor, there is no option to include a protective barrier.

Interesting.  Would it be possible to take a save file of an existing MP world, drop it in the editor, and add the modified player role and associated spawn point so that we can retain the protection barrier?  In other words, instead of generating a world and adding the role, what about taking an existing world that has the barrier and then add the role to that?

Thanks for the pointers - definitely gave me some food for thought.

I also solved the issue with mass harvesting of cotton/flax on my DS by having all players start with some inventory items, including a seed box that contains important seeds like cotton, flax, and rubber, to name just a few. My islands (two, side by side) are also much larger than the explore islands so there is plenty of room meaning its harder to wipe items from the islands, though I will replenish ore if needed.

Nice - is there a resource available for me to look into how to go about doing that?  I was thinking it would be great to set up starter kits for the people on my DS but wasn't sure how to make that happen.  I was thinking there'd have to be an object that dispenses it, which would then be exploited, but your idea sounds better and safer.

So my Steam email and Bohemia email are different.  I won't get a badge because of that?

They can be different, but make sure the steam account you have linked to your Bohemia account is the one with the Ylands - some people with multiple Steam accounts are linking the incorrect one.
