  1.   Aside from the creative game mode where you can just place as many blocks as you want without needing resources, I think it might be great if you simply added in random veins of coal, iron, copper, gold, flint, clay, and saltpeter into the ground. This would make mining more interesting as you look for veins under ground as well as provide more resources to the islands. Keep the surface veins but also have it so we have to dig very deep to find more. It might also be cool to add trace amounts of each building material near the vein so we know we are close while digging.

  2. Is Ylands going to keep this general standard for map size or will it increase? Maybe i'm spoiled with other sandbox games but I feel like the world could be much bigger. It doesn't take long to find every island once you get a ship, especially if you determine the pattern and spacing of where islands spawn. In creative mode you can make these islands much larger and random, I like what you did with the region selection so someone could get a similar biome to where they live, nice touch! But, with the low poly count art style of the game you can probably get away with doubling the map size.

  3. The free placement tool is a great tool to create the details of your buildings, what I like to do is place building materials in semi-organized piles around the structure i'm working on to make it look like a real work place, these objects are not perfectly aligned, they are leaning on things and stacked off line on purpose. I also like to lean work tools against rocks, walls, and general work space as to make it look lived in and immersive. The problem is, when i place things onto floors or sometimes the ground, the item will fall several blocks into the ground. For example; The wooden spear I had was going to lean against a wooden beam so I had to tilt it a little to make it look like it was naturally placed there but it keeps falling into the floor half way. Usually all it takes to place something flush with the floor is for the object to barely overlap, now it just falls through half way. Is there anyway to fix this?

Couldn't it be because of the light reflected off the block (depending on the position of the sun)?

This has been an issue for a while. No, it's not the light and shadow side of the block...it's not lighting effects. There's clearly a dark and light side. Also, even if it's the "back" and the "front" of a block, why not label it so while in build mode? That way we can align the dark/light sides correctly.

    Hey,

could you send me the savegame and an image of where you wanted to build? I suspect that there has been some overlap of the Ship and Global building grid. With the new system as long as the block outline you're trying to place is inside the Ship's space it will inherit it's grid. So there may be some issues while building close to a ship without the intention to build on the ship itself as the block will struggle to find correct position.

    Thank you.

    Hey,

there is a way to move the block away and towards the player. It's called Build range. It can be seen in the bottom right hint menu. It is on Ctrl + Mouse wheel on default.

    Hope this helps :).

Well no, i've gone on to explain in the steam forums that this new push and pull mechanic doesn't allow you to slide blocks through things...limiting customization of structures. I can't build a wall flush against the terrain for example. While pushing a block away from you it skips over bumps in the terrain and stops when it hits resistance. They need to change this.....how has no one seen the flaw in the new mechanic? The rotation tools are fine, push and pull needs to be changed.

  6. I read the diary and while I was a bit concerned they will be removing 1st person view, no where in this diary did it say it would be permanent and not only that but they also go on to mention that 3rd person would be receiving better mechanics for exactly the reasons people seem to fear, which is being able to place things correctly in build mode. If you play exclusively in first person, then I can see how you would be upset. I'm not sure how 3rd person can manage to do what first person did in tight spaces or within structures for selecting and block placement. I'm hoping what they say they are adding will alleviate this gap between first and third person when it comes to precise construction and selection.

  7. -The blueprints do not snap to the grid...so you are unable to add to them if you want because when you go into build mode it's unlikely that you placed the blue print exactly on the grid, therefor all the pieces you add are not lined up. For example...the log fort, i cannot simply extend or build upward without all the logs being off center.

-There needs to be more dangers in the world, bandit camps, maybe even named beasts that are particularly tough? I've seen people say that there is "nothing to do in this game" which I know isn't true at all...but perhaps the survival aspect needs to be a bit tougher? Yes, i can get killed randomly by a lion or jackal, but not if you aren't running blindly at night.

-Giving us the ability to build below decks in the ship hulls would be a great addition to the game.

-Give us the ability to build something and then save it as a template to place later in exactly the same way we had before, you just need to have the materials.

For a game where ships are such an importan part of the experience, moving around on deck is ridiculously unsafe. Even when walking carefully in a straight line on an anchored ship, the character glitches through walls and railings on a regular basis.

The problem is that the mechanics of the game allow your character to scale some pretty steep inclines...you can't tell me you haven't scaled the cliff of a mountain easily and gone "wow that was too easy" ...if the current railing are to work, they have to scale that back or make railings a unique object that just stops movement past that point. I wouldn't want them to scale down the way we can manage terrain. I made mine 3 blocks high and i can still just walk up them like steps....kind of ridiculous, i completely agree with you.

  9. I'm sure people have run into this issue where you dig on the ocean floor or dig somewhere where you interact with water and it leaves all these fractured spaces where you dug. I made the mistake of digging up sand near my coast and it seems to have caused the ocean to sink in parks but not stay even. I tried evening out the bottom of the ocean with the flat shovel but the area is still sunken....as if one huge swath of ocean is one step down from the rest. Any work around? Is water going to be more fluid in the future? I'd imagine it filling in any gap you were to dig but it acts more like jello.

  10. There's a lot of talk about respawning at beds but Bohemia thinks this might make the game too easy....which could very well be true. What if instead you have an option that allows friends to revive you? Why not have a downed state in multiplayer that runs out and then you completely die? If grouping will be an official thing later down the road, this could be a benefit of grouping with other people. I also think maybe map data could be shared with group members, another benefit.

Some other players mentioned that placing something with free placing mode (V by default) first should then allow you to place the ship parts correctly. Let us know if that doesn't do the trick.

I have suggested that build mode incorporate free place and block placement all in the same place, that way you can edit hardened objects. This work around you mention requires awful camera angle manipulation of said hull piece on a ship that isn't placed squarely on the world grid, if it were then you could flip the pieces 45 degrees and figure out how to place it evenly....as it stands now you are using the slight flicks of the mouse to align something perfectly, that will be difficult. I'm sure everyone is working hard on these issues....the work around just sounds horribly tedious at best. Fixing that glitching ship problem will be a welcome sight. Thank you for the reply.

  12. I just experienced a complete character wipe from a previous save game. At first i thought I had died but I remembered logging off on a dock I had built so sharks couldn't get me and this is a private game with a password. When i loaded the game it placed me in the character creation screen and every time I backed out and restarted the game it did the same thing again and again. I finally just recreated a character and it dropped me on my original starting island...all my structures were intact but all my crafting knowledge was gone, so I gathered materials for a little starter sail ship and set out to where i remember my main base being, everything was still there. The biggest down side is probably the loss of all the seeds I had collected along with all map data since the items my previous saved character had were all gone. Has anyone experienced this or has a work around perhaps to retrieve the lost character? If not, this should be on the list of priorities...losing character data is a huge blow to enthusiasm to play for people starting the game. I'll continue on to research more bugs. Thank you.

UPDATE: I just had this happen again on the same game after managing to get most of my stuff back and also managing to find my home base islands, along with a couple other islands for materials i needed. This is a very devastating bug that discourages me to play adventure mode. I'll stick with Creative and the editor for now. I hope this one is at the top of the list of priorities.

Love the suggestions, a lot of these I've been thinking of myself. Bump, don't want all these ideas getting buried!

Thanks! I have a slew of other ideas now that I've played a lot more. Feel free to add to this with your own ideas.

  14. Hey everyone!

I'm playing from the west coast of the U.S. and I'm having a blast right now planting forests, building docks, and customizing ships! Glad to be part of the ylands community.

I needed that creative itch scratched, as it were, and stumbled onto this game through steam. I've played a variety of these types of games before, i have played similar things like 7 days to die, Landmark, and World Adrift Island creator.

  15. I have to admit having never running into this issue until somewhat recently. When you place the ready made hull of the ship down and attempt to build on it with the pointed bow piece and also the rear stern piece, the ship starts to flip around as if it's the piece your are placing instead....i never had this problem with the smaller ship hull, now that i've made the larger hull and attempted to build on it, this bug appears. I cannot build on the ship at all, every time i attempt to move the piece into place the entire ship flips on it's side or upside down or high in the air. To be sure I have reset my game and also made sure the anchor was down before building...none of these have fixed the issue. For now, is there any work around for this issue? I feel like this problem is pretty serious, especially when one of the main themes of the game is sailing.

  16. The cursor icon for the pick, shovels, and hammers all need to be slightly outlined or darker so you can see them better.

Everything in game that is used as a tool or has a unique mechanic, needs some basic tool tip when highlighted. (there could be an option to turn these off)

Perhaps in later production stages you could add in more of a wake animation when the ships cut through the water? A trails through the water of bubbles or churned up water and some sort of waves coming off the bow of the ship as it moves through the water for more immersion. (no pun intended)

  17. I am enjoying the game so far and I've done my share of early access play over the years so I know what to expect, or not to expect in this case. There is certainly a lot to be done and I do not expect everything to be in game or working properly. These are some things I think might make the game better and easier on players. Some of these might already be in the works but it doesn't hurt to reiterate.

Global placement standard when building -
All free place objects, that is, any item or object (props?) that is not a direct building material, needs to come into the world on the grid, in a straight line. Most of the weapons and tools come into the world perfectly vertical...which is good. Now you need to make everything else the same way. When you free place with the hot key, V, you can then rotate it and shift it around anyway you want, you can set it against a wall, lean it on a fence post, etc....but all objects should come in on a 45 degree line.

One build mode for everything -
Ultimately I don't think free place and placing things on the grid (blocks) should be two separate things. There should be one build mode, maybe V can place you in a mode with editing tools and all the rotation tools you are used to in free place but you can move around hardened objects as well. Condensing all those tools into one place would be helpful.

Base stats, visual stats, numerical values -
Are we perhaps going to get an idea of what kind of values weapons and clothing have as far as the mechanics of the game goes? As it stands now, the 5 hearts for health is a rough estimate....i'm not even sure wearing different armor does anything to help me survive against a bear attack or from falling down a cavern vs. not wearing anything at all, there is definitely heat and cold in game so one would assume the values of clothing deal with those types of mechanics. I think having base stats would clarify and help people visualize what they are made of, in a manner of speaking. If an iron axe does more damage to a tree than a stone axe, what are the values? Having us be able to find ways of increasing our health might be something cool as well....Link went on quests and beat powerful foes to get more hearts...(hint, hint). Will there ever be any rpg elements to this game in the future?

    Server options-
If i am able to make my own game, there should be more server options available. Some examples might be; Setting up how many hours of daylight vs. night time, aggression of enemies, will beds be able to be used, etc.

Give us all the doodles and doodads for maps-

Probably something most people talk about, the map should have more interactive power, we should be able to place markers and way points. Our friends should show up on these maps as well. Maybe even have an option for drawing on the map.

    Officially making a group-
Perhaps there could be a way of making a party in game and seeing that visually change on screen, a picture of your friend next to their health...etc. Perhaps there could be thresholds that friends could have over people that are not part of your group, being able to enter locked doors, opening storage units, riding your horse, etc.

    Horses-

I have a sneaking suspicion that horses are just the start of something bigger as far as pets, mounts, and live stock go. The only problem is, their A.I. is horrible right now...they wander off and spook easily without much effort. There needs to be some commands to go along with the taming of these animals, first off...you should be able to tie the horse to something and have it stay still if you want. Add some nifty saddles, and water troughs we can make to the game and give us a way of rigging the animal to a tree or a fence. As I say this i realize you may be working on this right now but I am excited to see what you game designers come up with.

Interact with crows nest on ship masts-
It would be great if we could climb the masts and get up in those crows nests, you cannot climb the jacob's ladders which come with the masts, you should be able to interact with those. Maybe you could just give us a slew of new things to build our own masts and our own crows nests, either way would be great.

    Naming my ship-
I have already created my own sign and stuck it on the ship physically, but it would also be cool to name it officially by typing it in once you have made the ship so it show the name when you hover over it.

Retrieving arrows that have been fired/Throwing spear-
Both of these features should be in game, also being able to retrieve the spear would be great as well. The option to throw the spear would be like going into battle mode with the bow or you could use it as melee weapon with left click. All the tools and most of the melee weapons should work under water....maybe give us a spear gun? Harpoon?

    Buried treasure-

Finding maps that lead to treasure chests, a note in a bottle that hints at a hidden stash? Aside from finding the random points of interest on the islands, these would be welcome adds.

Don't be shy about diversifying the ocean! Thanks!

  18. There is still a malfunction with certain selected objects, lets take the assets/props you can place for the stern and bow of the ship. These are large pieces that come in to customize and add to the ship hull, i'm not exactly sure why this happens, in early access games there are lots of bugs and sometimes games just flat out deteriorate as you play. When you select objects such as the ones I mentioned and hit the H key to select a rotation option, the entire object vanishes from the screen, anytime you select an option other that the default the hot key starts you on objects you want to place in the world go away, you have to go back and rebuild it to place it....then does it does it all over again. A restart is normally needed to fix these things but it doesn't always work. These are things I think need to be fixed asap. Thank you.
