I have been playing this game a number of months but was away for a few updates. I am now using the STEAM version.  In trying to make a boat (the small sailboat) I get a message in red that it REQUIRES BLACKSMITH STATION:

I have never needed to use a Blacksmith Station in the past to create a boat. I tried both a blacksmith Forge and a Smelting Forge and a Foundary and it won't let me make the boat. I saw someplace a mention from someone you have to SPAM the button but even punching it over and over, I cannot make the boat. I have tried in the water, along the shore, and next to the Blacksmoth FORGE. i have also relogged as well as exiting and relaunching the game.

Please let me know what I am missing? I have made these boats countless times in the past with no issue but that was before recent updates.

    Hi,

don't worry! :) Seagulls will fly again in the next update - for now, they had to be grounded (at least some of them) as we're rewriting the AI (you may possibly notice some even other weird behavior as well, which is just temporary though - it should all go away in the upcoming update 0.5). One of the reasons for the AI being reworked from scratch is exactly what you ask for... cool companions with different behaviors (for that you will have to wait a bit more, but it will happen), and NPCs (those will come sooner).

Thanks for both kind words and feedback you provide!

    very excited!

  3. Ah,I am not too familiar with games that use openGL for some functions and DirectX for others ...

Or are they in the process of switching from DirectX to OpenGL in order to be more cross platform friendly?

Maybe this is the "exciting surprise" to bring more people to the game, they are going to aim for linux, mac ..  and consoles?

  4. Not sure whether this is a "bug" or an 'improvement" -- flocks of seagulls now are in greater numbers and no longer fly off when player approaches, making it easy to smack them and collect feathers for arrows

    • I like very much getting feathers easier
    • I miss a little the gulls flying off when you approach

(Probably, I would prefer being able to set rope snares for birds and hares, baiting with seeds)

Actually I am hoping the "secret surprise update" is ability to capture/tame/domesticate/train/breed animals -- I want some trained guard boars I can take along hunting with me ^_^ plus a little seagull "coop" or building nests for eggs & feathers

Still wish there was a way to PAUSE singleplayer games as logging out / logging in is very time consuming when you need to be afk for a couple minutes to care for family

Will this next update feature any rebalancing of resource distribution?

    Apparently so! From today's changelog:

    • Generating of veins was redone into new better system

  6. is it a windows 7 laptop? Or is in win8/10?

Sometimes with the radeon switchable settings, there is a global setting where you can tell it to ALWAYS use "high performance" (which is radeon graphics) and never use "battery saving" or "power saving" (which is Intel graphics)

    37019d1391959355t-win-8-amd-switchable-g

Lenovo also has a driver download page where you can check for driver updates for your specific model:

    http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t440s/downloads

(select in dropdown for "display and Video" then your operating system)

  7. I know he has already gotten a different computer, I am just documenting this as it will likely come up again for someone else.

According to this page by Microsoft on updates needed by Win7 computers to run DX 11.1 features: :

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2670838/platform-update-for-windows-7-sp1-and-windows-server-2008-r2-sp1

You have to run a special update (update 2834140)  if you have a laptop with switchable graphics of Intel+Radeon, as they claim there that the normal DX11 update for Win7 is incompatible with the radeon switchable driver

Compatibility issues on certain computers that have hybrid video cards

Important Some computers that have a combination of Intel and AMD video cards in a hybrid configuration have drivers installed that are incompatible with this platform update.

After you install this update and then restart the computer, the computer may crash because of these compatibility issues. In this situation, you receive a Stop error message that resembles the following:

Screen shot of the Stop error

Note This Stop error includes the "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" text and the Igdpmd64.sys or Igdpmd32.sys file name.

To resolve this issue, you may have to install update 2834140 ("0x00000050" Stop error after you install update 2670838 on a computer that is running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1). Additionally, use the following tables to install the latest compatible drivers for your video card.

  8. What type of video card do you have? Some of the older ones like GT240 do not support a high enough DirectX version.

You also need DirectX 11.1 installed on the computer. Some Win7 computers need an update before they can run DX 11.1

please note that apparently if you have a laptop with "switchable graphics" of both Intel and Radeon, there is a special download you need to apply at the end of that page.

is there an error log in your YLands folder?  Or do you know how to generate a dxdiag report and post it here?

(Go to START, RUN/Search, type "dxdiag" (no quotes), enter, click on SAVE ALL INFORMATION, then drag that file here -or- open it in notepad and copypaste

It's most like a graphics issue, as long as it is not a hardware issue it should be easy to fix.

    Minimum requirements

    OS:Windows 7/8/8.1/10 (64-bit Operating System Required)

    Processor:Intel Core i3-4160 @ 3.60GHz processor

    Memory:4 GB RAM

Graphics:discrete DirectX 11 GPU with at least 1GB of VRAM

    DirectX:11

    Hard Drive:1 GB

If you are not sure how to tell what you have, the dxdiag report should help us spot any weak area.

We can walk you through the steps if you get confused, so just ask.

  9. I tend to use some style of spear or lance, and lighter armor, and do something that is kind of a cross between "Oberyn Martell aka Red Viper,  vs The Mountain", and an old 1990s Final Fantasy Dragoon with JUMP special attack (Kain).

    3871292-6266420118-N5v3F.gif

Pretty much I constantly bounce around in a circle so that it has a harder time trying to target me, while i poke with my spear as often as I can. Bounce-Bounce-Poke-Bounce-Bounce-Poke.. I try to jump the opposite way it spun last (clockwise v counter). I don;t actually know for a fact whether spears/lances even have longer melee range/reach, or whether lighter armor makes one more agile/nimble at evasion, but in my mind it always seems like a decent strategy.

Probably 20% of the time i die anyway cuz i am really not all that good at it :P but i will take 80% wins.

(Well, you did ask for A tactic and not necessarily the best tactic...)

  10. Please allow a PAUSE key in singleplayer. Sometimes i need to leave the game to care for family members, and i do not always know if it is for 1 minute or 10 minutes

    • if i DON'T log out to main menu, i either get killed by a wolf or literally STARVE as there is only a relatively brief window between "Hungry" and "DEAD" if i can;t get back right away
    • if i DO log out to main menu, I have a long wait to load everything back up again -or- as happened in my last game, I come back to find it  stuck on the SAVING screen

If makes me frustrated and I end up just closing the game and playing something else

I googled hoping there already was some secret PAUSE key but could not find anything

EDIT: maybe opening the CODEX can pause the game in singleplayer mode.

  11. Now you have me curious about the logistics of building from scratch a flat bottomed catamaran by building two bamboo rafts with a connecting platform between them and a smaller sail (or two) jammed in the middle. The main benefit over a normal boat, is the ability to sail very close to shorelines in shallow waters.

I had once or twice felt like my little bamboo raft-with-two-baskets was actually faster than my large ship with sails, and possibly also faster than my wooden raft (which I had less luck attaching baskets to) which leads me to wonder how much weight and physics play in boat speeds, add to that the ability to apparently gain speed with extra masts,

makes me curious whether this would make a nice exploration boat that you could sleep on, cook on, and bring along a small amount of storage, while keeping it ultralight in weight

    Cata-Tonga-3v.jpg

    Another example:

    hsufu-20001.jpg

    getpubliccontent?contentId=d3f93ae7-812b

    blogger-image--684356222.jpg

The idea is not to compete with a full size sailing ship with canons and cabins and heavy weight, but instead something very lightweight, shallow, hopefully semi fast, and practical for sea exploration

One of the problems I had with using a raft was that, once while stopping to check my map on a little raft, a passing shark ate me D: so I wanted something with a more protected middle space that could also hold a sleeping mat plus 2-4 wicker baskets

This is the price you pay  for playing the $ 10 ALPHA game  guys. :P

I have dug out my boat three times before I smartened up and stopped sailing near shore-immersion complete!

I have lost at least two large ships that were

    1) Quite a long ways from shore but there was a small sand bar offshore much farther than expected

    2) Could not be dug out because the sand bar was very narrow and most of the area was too deep and water was FREEZING and I was not able to even dig one action

    3) In cold climates you cannot get to shore to make a raft before you die from the cold water

I like the idea of somehow being able to "rock the boat" free -- perhaps make it   time consuming  enough that people are wary of sand bars, but not as time consuming as losing a ship AND needing to quit or die to simply get off the stuck ship.

Looking forward to some improvements in the next update. (Yes we KNOW it's an alpha and that's why we are giving developers feedback, so they know where the dividing line is between "challenging immersion" and "unneeded frustrations"...)

  13.

The answer is, no, you might have DirectX11 installed on your computer but GTX275 will not support DirectX 11

It is Win7 that supports DX11 but not DX12

If you decide to get a new card, the GTX1050 is pretty economical and can often be found new under $100 (see neweggs, sometimes they have sales on these).

if your budget is super tight, you can also look for a secondhand card on ebay for someone selling their GTX650 or GTX750ti as these will will run the game nicely and can often be found used for $25-$35

(Some people always need "the very latest" and will upgrade their otherwise-perfectly-good-card card every year or so, so buying a secondhand one is a bit risky but usually okay.)

All of those cards have very low power requirements (less than your current GTX275), need no additional 6-pin power cable connections, so can usually be installed in any standard mid tower compuer with PCI-E slots.

Rest of your computer looks very nice!

And GTX275 was originally a super nice card in its day. Just time for a new one as this won't be the last game where you have DX11 issues.

  14. I had a second crash so am sending all of those. It's in a different world, it was after sleeping and I had just heard the little *ploosh* noise that I think means something respawned nearby, when it crashed. The output log should report two different crashes.

This is not TOO bad to have two crashes in one week, but in case you want to see the output log and dxdiag they are attached. If you are too busy with other things that is ok also, I will just reload the game as it is not an urgent issue and probably hard to recreate or track down..

Incidentally I also get the bug reported where you cannot climb the ship ladder ("FAILED") after you arrive at a new island :

That's a more serious/urgent bug for me and I will probably just use the smaller "Boat" and "Raft" for now and leave the "Ships" alone till that gets fixed.

Very much enjoying the game so far!!
