Cant place torch stand/small target?

Hey there,

just picked up the game and i'm having some issues. I've crafted a small target and a torch stand, but I can't seem to place them anywhere. If I try to left click with either all I can do is swing the item like a weapon. I've tried placing the torch stand on flat ground and placing the target on a wall, but am unable to do either. I never get options on the screen to place either item either. Thanks!

Are you activating the placing mode via V?
