Conducting a Shark Chorus line.....
-
The worry is that when the shark dies, it suddenly de-stabilizes your ship until you remove it .. and your ship cannot move until its removed! The sharks get stuck on your ship ... and it would be a solution to the issue if they did not do this. I have had them try to attack me on the shoreline and beaching themselves. You end up with all these sharks "floating" above the water around your Yland. It sure makes the game a challenge!

S.S. Ridiculous made it home safely after a grand tour, and was docked with 4 sharks sticking out of its superstructure. I discovered not to kill off the stuck sharks in inhospitable areas or at sea, because as soon as the shark "dies", the corpse assumes weight and overbalances your ship. You then cannot move the ship until either the corpse disappears after a day, or you gut it...which is dangerous as the ship will right itself and there's the possibility you will get tossed into the ocean amidst other sharks waiting for a snack. Even so, after ridding the hull of the sharks i brought home my ship ended up in a funny angle in the dock as it righted itself after each corpse removal, and the local sharks turned up en masse to seek revenge! So the walkway at waterline around the ship does work... in a fashion. Sharks will get stuck on it or in it, but they don't seem to be able to get onto the deck and maul you. Now when building your ship, make sure the helm is not close to the stern, and any sleeping equipment is placed on the ships center and ahead of the helm. Also build a horizontal waterline walkway around the stern so the sharks cannot get too close to you. I might experiment with outward facing metal spikes on the stern walkway ... and modify the ships bow with some sort of walkway ...like a landing craft.

actually, you can see another "air-shark" in the background...altogether i located 5 of them either o on the surface, or suffering from gas and floating just above the water
-
The S.S Ridiculous seems to be a success. As clumsy and slow as it is, the additional walkway at the waterline around the stern keeps sharks (it seems) from climbing aboard underneath the deck. The sharks still attack, but they are kept at a safe distance from your rear end Now all i have to do is reverse the ship up to a pier etc and then spear the shark from the safety of dry land. Once one shark becomes airborne like this it seems to infect other sharks in the area and see them floating on the surface adjacent to or on the beaches where they lurk. so fellow seafarers, if you construct a waterline horizontal barrier around the stern of your ship , it seems it can reduce the incident of sharks trying to get on board without buying a ticket

This is my dock area, with twin bays for mooring and modifying ships ... thats my base in the background, and to the right you can see the flax plantation. The 3 palm trees are an aid to navigation Note the horizontal barricade/walkway around the S.S. Ridiculous ..its intention is to prevent sharks getting on board.

If you can build a base on the shoreline, the better. Chose a bay with navigable waters close in and using stone panels construct a floor to the waters edge, then build up your walls and ceiling. As soon as possible , build a strong door at each exit to keep out predators a,d other animals like goats rabbits crabs etc that will wander in and interrupt your sleep. Put in an internal staircase to a 2nd level ..and put up a tower and decorate it with lanterns ...it will help you locate your base should you get caught outside in bad light. Extend your pier out to navigable waters... and on 2 levels ...one at ship deck height so you can build and avoid sharks ...and another at the other side of your ship at sea level ..to make a U shaped dock .. so you have some means to scramble to safety if you accidentally fall into the water and there are sharks around. I found it helpful to put a barrier around the side of your ship ..and use container/boxes ... that way it gives you some guidance not to fall overboard..and you have places to store needed things and stuff obtained form other islands. It is wise to put on your ship spare tools and materials on your ship to do repairs.. once after having a snack i accidentally clicked the mouse button too often and punched the helm of my ship ...destroying it! Luckily I managed to swim ashore ..and return via a raft with materials to re build the helm. Needless to say i was pursued by sharks both times! Its best to not start on building a ship until after you have your base built and secured... i would gather up all the flax/cotton i came across and planted it near my base, harvesting it to get more seed and expanding the plantation. By the time you are ready to build your ship you will have enough flax/cotton to build more than enough cloth for sails etc

@Eriugam ...yes! They will watch me while i am building on the shoreline ...sometimes 3 of them! What you can do is lure them in closer, then use dirt deposited around and behind them to trap them ... build a dirt bridge out to them then get a spear and slaughter them one at a time and collect the fish meat I have my base built on the shoreline with a two level pier stretching out to navigable waters. I had to place a land barricade around the area where my bed is because they would come in close to the shoreline and try to get under my room and interrupt my beauty sleep The seem to be attracted as soon as you lay the keel of a ship, and when you are on a ship and release the controls to look at your map or feed. I have built a marble "curtain" around the stern of my ship ..with horizontal projections ..it seems to be keeping them away, and the projections might make the ship clumsy looking but at sea level they assist in exiting/boarding your ship when exploring other islands. I missed out the opportunity to take a funny pic of 5 sharks lined on the shore watching me ... it looked like i was conducting a " shark chorus line "

S.S Ridiculous made its maiden voyage ..still needs finishing but appears to be successful .. ( touch wood!) Was trailed by at least 6 sharks and despite their threatening noises...non tried to come aboard. Only issue was i got caught in an uncharted shoal and got stuck and spent a couple of hours digging the ship out and spearing sharks who knew i was in the water and came form every direction... Nevertheless i had a good supply of shark meat to feed on got some more cosmetic - and mod- work to do on the ship

RESOLVED animals unresponsive... dead areas on island..
kimbuck replied to kimbuck's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
Well... i havent seen any pink elephants etc., but its worrying when you are digging up ore, and know there's wolves around, but surrounded by stampeding boars running back and forth around you ... Maybe the issue was internet related.... sometimes i think i am connected to the www by lengths of knotted wet string put up by a drunken spider Got my new ship ...s.s ridiculous ready for a shark test... hopefully i don't lose this one by those finned hijackers... -
RESOLVED animals unresponsive... dead areas on island..
kimbuck replied to kimbuck's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
Wow ..did you guys do anything... like add "hare" restorer ...or give the boars a shot of adrenaline? went to that suspect area today and the rabbits have gone mad .there's a plague! - and the boars were leaping off cliffs over my head and travelling in packs like you see migrating animals! Even had a friendly shark smiling at me at the waters edge! This is a strange yland i am on...i cannot find a cave entrance anywhere, but i suspect i will discover a cave while digging for ore. So ... Digging carefully.... with spear handy.. -
Perhaps we all should smile at the developers and bat our eyelids... ... they might oblige ... at as they aleady have a lot to do, give them time. Hmmm sharks can rotate through 45 degrees
-
Maybe we could drop potato grenades or dynamite overboard wrapped in shark bait? It seems that wood is the material the sharks can penetrate easily .. they came in through the side wood panels of my ship ..and one tried over the bow...which was wood and not coated with another material..... ???
-
Also ..finding bugs and reporting them helps the game develop ...more so than those who ignore the bugs and complain to themselves. This game is enjoyable and has potential ...... the more enjoyable it becomes through the swatting of bugs, then the potential will develop quicker and further. We need sharks with friendlier smiles

Unfortunately they are animals of the wrong gender and species ....... als they are hiding in my monitor and not sitting beside me.

RESOLVED animals unresponsive... dead areas on island..
kimbuck replied to kimbuck's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
will do so ... as soon as i find out how and where to find them ...looking under carpet..... -
Australia's national airline Qantas has a flying kangaroo as its symbol ...well in my yland ( called gruntland) the future airline will have the symbol of flying rabbits
-
didn't take a screenshot but saw a couple of them hovering about a meter above the waterline near the shore. I appreciate that its a difficult one to solve ...removing bugs like this is like removing a lump under a newly laid carpet....flatten one and another pops up nearby You could try draining the oceans and then we could hunt them down on horseback
-
It looks like some sharks have not read the changelog or forums ..and persist in hitchhiking. It happens when you release the controls to snack ..or read your map. One shark made it onto the front deck, but wriggled off before i could take a screenshot ... the other 2 i manage to spear and kill before they got me, but the corpse nearly overturned the ship. During my trip, there were at least 3 sharks circling under the hull whenever i tried to snack...or read the map. We need harpoons

Preparing to test the new patch for sharks that like to climb aboard boats. The new boat is 75% complete, but as you can see ..we already have testers waiting...!
-
there have been a few quite funny scenes.. i never thought about capturing them as screenshots until just now ...like the time i was woken up by a boar standing on top of me in bed! There has also been some beautiful scenes too ..like sunsets with a storm building up ..or a moonlit night with the choppy seas.. This game never ceases to surprise...
-
looking forward to the deployment of that patch... Saw my first shark in this new game ...but as you saw, it was stuck in the side of a hill. I constructed my dock in a nice safe friendly bay... and was even wandering around in the water to ensure the building blocks aligned properly. Not a shark in sight! So started on the construction of the S.S Ridiculous ...i crafted the keel , scrambled aboard to deploy the anchor to stop it floating away and next thing i heard the dreaded gloph gloph sound .. yup a shark was now lurking between me and the dock! Fortunately i had some logs in my inventory and constructed a temporary bridge to get ashore without losing a toe or two. came back with more wood to construct the front and aft ..and this ship hull was literally surrounded by sharks! - one at the stern ( pictured) tasting the stone walkway ,and the other two at the front one near the ladder and the other under the bow. Either i am using the wrong deodorant..or the wood i am harvesting contains pieces of shark- magnet

Hooray! will not need aloe vera bandages anymore to put on the shark bite marks on our backsides
