Fresh custom 0.7 map coming saturday!
Baz Foobar replied to Stephenw1992's topic in General Discussion
Great job Stephen! Looking forward to seeing this grow! -
I run a Dedicated Server and noticed that someone was able to unlock doors that were locked and kill someone who was within their protective barrier (after somehow unlocking their doors). He was able to do this to two different players (that I know of, im still going through backup saves to see what else was done). Now I suppose it's possible that this guy is just lucky and managed to find backup keys that the other players may have hidden (assuming they exist), but that still doesn't explain how he was able to kill someone in their own barrier. Anyone else seeing these potential exploits out in the wild? I have an enforced no-griefing policy, no exceptions rule on my server, so he's banned for now, but if these exploits are out there, I suspect I'll be dealing with others.

OK, after reviewing my backup files from today, I was able to piece together the chain of events that this guy followed. Aside from the inventory exploit (which I've been able to reproduce), looks like he got into two properties through legitimate break-in techniques. The first one was done by using /freecam at night to scan for vulnerabilities (parts of the floor that touched or crossed through the barrier) and once he located that, he tunneled down, under, and up. The first victim had a spare key in a container that wasn't locked and he robbed the place and unlocked the front door and walked right out. He then took their boat by breaking the anchor which was locked. The second house had no vulnerabilities through the barrier that he could take advantage of, but after casing the joint for a while he finally found a container outside that held backup keys to the house and let himself in the front door. He killed the owner, but it turns out this was not through an exploit but through a bug that had nothing to do with him - the owner's association to the protective barrier was glitched and it did not recognize the owner. I've seen this happen to a handful of people now, not exactly sure what causes it, but usually resets after death and coming back. So, lessons learned: Harden your structures - Don't expand out to touch the barrier boundary, give yourself some buffer space. Don't leave spare keys where someone will find them, or at least keep them far away so if someone does find them, they won't know what they're for. Accept that boats are vulnerable and don't get attached to them - it is a trivial exercise to remove a locked helm or anchor lever and replace it with a new one and keeping a boat in your barrier does nothing to protect it. Finally, make sure your barrier is associated to you - try to deactivate/activate it to confirm it's associated to you and if not, have your server admin give you a new one (they'll have to compose one and bring it in via editor). To the guy who I banned today - nothing personal, I admire your tenacity, but I do have rules on my server. You asked me where they were right before the ban - you already knew where they were since you logged in to the server (sign that you see as soon as you get in), and you logged into my Discord (Pinned message in the channel you enter). If you ignored both of them, well that's no excuse. Either way, no second chances on my server.

OK, I think opening the doors was done by sheer luck of finding spare keys outside of people's houses, so no exploit there. I'm still not sure how they were able to kill someone within their active barrier, nor can I explain how they were storing general objects in specialized containers. The investigation continues...

I did some further forensics on what was going on during this reign of terror and I discovered that this player had multiple containers on him that contained regular items of various types. He's a bag full of tricks, that's for sure.

RESOLVED [YLD-8970] Died, then spawned on a different island.
Baz Foobar replied to bojo2736's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
Great idea mid endian - I was actually going to suggest this but bb cakes provided specific landmark information so I knew exactly where she was. It was then just a bit of an exercise to find her raft and dropped inventory to put all three pieces together safely for her return. I hope the editor eventually allows us to go directly to a player/corpse. I know there are at least a dozen people who have logged in to my server and are no longer at spawn island but have not returned. I suspect some of them are corpses somewhere at sea as I've search every island for corpses to clean up on a regular basis. -
Agree with all the comments so far - to address Velocifer's valid points, I would add a restriction in how often you can move a barrier. Once you drop it and activate it, you should have a minimum amount of time before you are allowed to pick it up again.

Looking forward to further improvements in MP/DS. Thanks for the update.

RESOLVED Can't come back in the server - Character dead, can't respawn
Baz Foobar replied to Scaliom's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
The propeller pack is full of glitch. If you die with it equipped, it can cause problems where you can't reincarnate, or you walk around as a ghost, or you glitch in place constantly spinning or shaking. If you do make it back in alive, somehow the prop pack refuses to come off your back, but it no longer allows you to fly... the list goes on. I recommend avoiding the prop pack for now, along with the cannon which also gets bugged and becomes irremovable. -
Back when I played on other servers, I would leave it alone unless I kept coming back to it later and it was clear the previous owner had moved on and wasn't coming back. Then I'd look through it to see if there was anything I needed, and then I'd leave the rest for anyone else. So I guess my response is all of the above, depending on timing

DEV ANSWER Item disapper while using it
Baz Foobar replied to Scaliom's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
Did this happen while you were eating? There's a bug whereby you end up eating the highlighted item even if you started the action on a food object. -
That's BB Cake's ship. If you look over the starboard side, you'll find her swimming with the fishies.

Ability to do something with body corpse inside your Protective Barrier
Baz Foobar replied to Scaliom's question in Suggestions & Feedback
Unless your server admin performs a regular cleanup, the only other solution I've found is to dig a hole beneath them and pile dirt on top. Alternatively, do what Kimbuck suggested and build your house above water or a pit, as people gather in your house and become unwanted guests, drop the floor underneath them to eject them into the water/pit below. Works for dead or the living -
RESOLVED Remove the energy streams completely.
Baz Foobar replied to Captain Monki's question in Suggestions & Feedback
This would satisfy my requirement as well and make it less of a burden on the game engine to determine visibility. Just let the builder dictate it! -
RESOLVED Remove the energy streams completely.
Baz Foobar replied to Captain Monki's question in Suggestions & Feedback
I also don't like seeing them all over the place, even though they're less visible than before, but I also don't want to see electric poles that don't show the "wires" going from one pole to another. Perhaps a compromise can be made - if the "wire" is along a physical object, don't show it without the linker. If the "wire" is crossing from one node to another over air or water, show the faint wire without the linker and the highly visible wire with the linker. This way, building structures with wiring won't show green lines going from node to node, but nodes in the open going through air/water will show something there. Or something along those lines anyway, doesn't have to be that exactly, but some effort to clean up our structures without having to use extra layers of blocks to hide the "wires". That would be more realistic, but given the large granular size of a basic building block, it wouldn't be feasible. -
[TUTORIAL] How to place your editor composition in explorer game
Baz Foobar replied to YadNiMonde's topic in General Discussion
I've got a building that I'm trying to transfer from one map to another and I've selected all of the objects that make up the structure and then saved it as a composition. I made sure that every object was selected and I confirmed that everything was a part of it by deleting it and seeing nothing left over. I then went into a new map and selected the composition for placement. Placing it in the world brought it over but then I noticed a corner of the structure was missing completely. No matter how many times or different ways I've tried to do it, it ends up missing that corner. Anyone know what's going on or have some suggestions on how to work around this? -
Depends on the time of day in-game for the game save file you're editing. Drop a lit bonfire down somewhere and you'll see.
-
Seems to be a problem in MP as well, I've noticed.
-
I host my own servers but I have used g-portal in the past and haven't had any issues with them. Can't speak for any other providers, but honestly at this point given the state of the game's development especially as it relates to MP, I can't recommend anyone spend money on commercial hosting for this yet.

Did you have "SessionDataType" : "BuiltIn" and "SessionData" : "Explore" set in your json file? I thought 0.7 fixed it so it doesn't recreate a new world if an existing save file is found, but maybe that's not the case here and your json settings forced it to regenerate anyway. For future reference, once you have a generated map, change SessionDataType from BuiltIn to "YlandFile" and SessionData to "<filename of save game>". Example: "SessionDataType": "YlandFile", "SessionData": "SessionSave.ylandsgame",

Most likely those dedicated servers haven't been updated by their owners yet. We had two recent patches this week and the client needs to match the server version for it to be available.

Sharknado!

I could move the clone over to your base and kill it for you to see if you can salvage anything off of it, but at this point I'm not sure it's worth trying to play the game going all the way across the globe unless performance is drastically improved with the upcoming patch. Wish you had a better experience - the server itself is a pretty beefy enterprise rack server with plenty of CPU/Memory and a Gigabit connection to the Internet, but the current state of the game doesn't really take advantage of any of it. It slows to a snails pace eventually no matter what. Either way, let me know if you want me to try anything with your avatars on my server. I'm usually on during my evenings, GMT-5, so not sure if there's a good time for us to coincide on.

Apparently the soil in Ylands is very soft. I loaded the map into the editor and saw entire populations of animals below the world. I must've deleted at least a hundred of them from just underneath the initial spawn area.
-
This must've been my server - I see you have two bodies that aren't dead - one sitting in a base along the coast, and another standing at the spawn point. At this point, we're just waiting for the next patch before doing anything serious. Will be wiping and starting fresh.
