Very unclear on how to start protected games

I've been very confused about how protected games work ever since they came out but in this recent update I'm absolutely so confused. 

I am clicking a random game in the workshop and it's asking me to start a server. I think just having a play button and a gear icon with advanced options would be much more ideal than this. 

I think from a usability standpoint it's really important not to hit people with options they don't understand until they develop a deeper understanding of the game in my opinion.
