    Dev Diary #199 Feedback Fur-ever!

Hey there, Ylanders! As we're nearing the release of the next update, which is jam packed full of fixes, quality of life improvements and polishing, we wanted to check in and say that it's looking great! So far, we've told you about mass pick up, custom map markers, workstation fixes, new Editor features, larger maps, achievements, client scripting and ship and torch improvements. But that's of course not all. There is much more coming and it is coming soon. Apart from the sweet sweet update, we will also be hosting a live stream with the developer team showing you some of those features and also answering any questions you might have, so start writing them down so that we can answer them for you during the stream! (screenshot by YoHasLEGO) And since we're now past the datalock (remember datalock? we talked about it here), we're of course already working on future updates and thinking about what is going to be next for Ylands. One feature we would like to give more love to are pets. Pets deserve our love in real life but also in the game. And because we want you to have the pet that you like the best, we'd like to expand the choice of pets in Ylands. Soooo... what kind of pets would you like to see in the game? Let us know what kinds of pets you would like, any details about pets in general or what you like and don't like about pets in their current state. We're gonna get back to work, but please do let us know about pets! Stay classy and healthy and the amazing players you are, Ylanders!

BUG: Stuck on Starter Yland / Can't claim raft

Hey! So this is not a big, this is intended behavior! You should craft a boat instead of a raft, it will be much easier to travel in between ylands
  10. Hey there, Ylanders! Update 1.8: Awesome Achievements is out now! What do you think so far? In today's dev diary, we would like to show you what happens when you ask a person, who loves their job and project, to write you a short quote for the dev diary. ? All jokes aside, our Project Lead, Aleš Ulm, wanted to tell you "a bit" about the direction of Ylands in the past, in the present and a tiny bit about the future. "There's a page at our internal documentation system. It's called Awesome & Crazy. I created that page at 10:07am on 16th February 2015. That page contains all the awesome and crazy ideas that we wanted our game to have. The list is long ranging from things that we've already implemented to such that we had (and still have) no idea how to implement. For me personally this page IS Ylands. It's about exploring and having fun. Unfortunately, at a certain point these things changed. Not only wasn't Ylands fun to play anymore, it wasn't that much fun to make. When I've returned to the Project Lead position I set us in a direction to fix that. Now, about a year later, I think we've found again our passion for making Ylands and are having fun again. And we hope that it will be fun for you to play. Judging from the new players that are slowly coming back to Ylands some of you already noticed and I would like to thank you for that. This feedback is incredibly important to us. If you like the direction we've taken during the past year, please let us know. Rate us on Steam to make other players see we're back and worth giving a try, it's immensely important to us and shows us that what we're now building makes sense. That thumb up (which you can always change, if we fail you), telling your friend that devs at Ylands have come back to their senses, that's the fuel we're now running on. As someone who was there when the Ylands was born and is now in the control of project, I will make sure we will all get the game we've dreamed. And if still not convinced? Well, come back to check 1.9, which, with all its focus on sailing, diving and exploring, will surely make you see that Ylands is back." There has been a lot of information about 1.8 today, which is why we will remind you of this again, but, much like Marvelous Mysteries did, Awesome Achievements will also have a special dev stream, where we will introduce some of the new stuff that 1.8 brought to the world of Ylands. Mark your calendars and see you on Tuesday, November 16 at 4pm CET! Have a wonderful time playing Awesome Achievements and... Stay Classy, Ylanders!

    1.8: AWESOME ACHIEVEMENTS - changelog

Highlights Main menu overhaul The new menu is on its way to your monitors and displays! We wanted to showcase all the fun that can be enjoyed in Ylands, as well as put the Exploration back into the spotlights where it belongs. Let us know what you think about it. Achievements and Titles Awesome Achievements are a must-have part of the game to some, not so important to others. We always wanted them in the game, because it's easier to recognize a skillful player when there is a noble title next to the name. Larger maps Because of some serious technical issues, we had to generate ylands with a max size of 3x3 km in the past. Nobody was really satisfied with this limitation. It took us a tremendous amount of hard work, but finally, we can see the results. Ylands may be up to 8x8 km. To make the experience of exploring the vast lands of Ylands more exciting, we have also added more space between the individual ylands. Exploration tutorial Ylands is a huge game with a lot of possibilities. We heard your calling for the tutorial. It's optional, only at the beginning of the game and it teaches new players how to craft important things, sleep, build a raft and sail. We also marked some interesting places to help new players at the beginning of their journey of exploration. Mass pickup action Sometimes, the clickfest when picking up things is just a bit too much. From now on, you can collect all the chopped wood by one long RMB hold. And not just wood, it works on everything pickable in the game. It will let you pick up all things of the same type lying close to your avatar at once. But if you enjoy clicking on every piece of item you want to pick up you're still welcome to do it your way! Multiplayer game flow polish We admit it right away. Inviting friends to multiplayer games was kind of witchcraft. Especially if you wanted to play Exploration together. Now it's much easier, takes you fewer mouse clicks and works right away! Let us know if there is still anything we can improve. New Mystery Ylands Two new Mystery ylands have been added (and more are on the way). Far Reaches for the polar region and Imaginarium yland for the tropical region. Get out there and solve some mysteries! Taking your animals with you Have you found and tamed your soul animal in the game, but didn't like that you cannot simply take them on an adventure to a different yland with you? Now it's possible! You can summon your animal friend in a different scenario. Enjoy new adventures with your new travel companion! Random default avatar It's a small change but a welcome one. All the new avatars have completely randomized looks. Butterfly, Corn Bandit & Ghost Nut pets New pets in the store. Cute and cool. Map polish Many things were tweaked and polished on the Exploration map. If we did a good job, you might not notice at the first glance, but when you use the map you will feel that it just works better. It's smooth and more intuitive. Quality of life improvements Have you struggled to claim your ship? Or was it hard to find out which ship on the sea is actually yours? Have you been confused within the workstations tabs or have you asked yourself, why is this particular item being held in your avatar's hands and another is not? Yeah, we were there too. That's why we checked every detail in the game and made sure that everything was in the right place and the game is consistent on every level. Terrain generation polish Ylands were too circular and biomes were always clearly separated. So we pushed a few buttons and now the ylands can have more elongated shapes with a small portion of combined biomes (like a desert with dead trees, but still some life in it etc..) Mobile platform Exploration pack First, we let you play Exploration on your mobile. Another step was to recognize the platform and let you decide if you want to play it only on mobile or PC. You may now purchase Exploration as mobile-only from your iOS or Android device. Those with a PC version can play both on PC and mobiles without any restrictions (because, well, PC rules them all). Exploration pack can now be purchased with Coyns The Exploration pack (both the PC and mobile-only) can be now purchased with Coyns. While the PC pack price remains roughly the same, players don't get any more Coyns after purchasing (quite understandably), which effectively means that those who now buy the Exploration pack with Coyns will get about half its original value. So thank you for your support! Exploration is now available for the Microsoft Store version Because we've changed the way players can purchase Exploration, it is now available for the MS store version. Simply buy it with your Coyns and enjoy the game. Please note that this version does not yet support P2P multiplayer and as such is more fitting for a single-player experience. Crafting improvements and fixes As mentioned several times on this page, we focus on the details, like the color difference between the recipe and item in the Hotbar, which should be more intense. There are some other user-friendly changes. Loading hints All the loading screens in Ylands will show you useful tips and tricks. We will make sure that you won't forget about any features. And also, there are new Editor tips and tricks, so there is something for all of you. General UI polish 46 tasks were created with a detailed description of what should work better in terms of our UI. You will find these all throughout the game, from small to larger changes, each of them making the user experience better. One example for all - we overhauled the whole screen for workstations so it takes you fewer clicks to craft something there. Additional recipes Recipes for some objects, that couldn't be crafted so far, can be found in Random Encounters. We will keep adding more with every update. Editor: Skills 2.0 Until now, skills could be initiated only from the skill bar, which has proven to be not really that useful in many situations. The goal was to give players more ways of initiating the skills in order to widen the use of this feature. Editor: Advanced Error log This new tool is available for our Creators. Error logs window shows all the error entries encountered during export or playtest. Each entry links to a relevant problematic object or instruction. It will help you identify and fix errors much faster. Editor: Client scripting (beta) Some games of our creators might suffer by the fact, that we checked all the actions on our server first. This caused short delays which could frustrate not only the creators, but the players too. That's why we're adding so-called local scripting, it first happens on the device where it runs, so there is no delay, the action will happen immediately. It works only for selected Game Logics. Although fully working, the interface, as well as the documentation, still deserves some love - that's why we consider this a beta stage. Editor: Custom map markers A new in-game map will allow Creators to help their games' players to navigate their games with the help of markers, which are actually the Creators' own custom image. Editor: Quality of life improvements A lot of small tweaks and details, around 60 of them, were implemented. We also added some new events, ragdoll instructions and individual UI buttons. Go and check it out. Everything works better, you'll see! Mobile ambient improvements Up until now, the mobile version felt a little bit darker and less colourful than its PC sibling. Well, no more. Say hi to improved visuals. New Assets Pets: Butterfly Ghost nut Corn bandit Mythical: Boar Camel Bear (3 variants) Crab Deer Reindeer Goat Honey Badger Hyena Lizard Ostrich Penguin Rabbit (2 variants) Cat (5 variants) Sheep (2 variants) Wolverine Game assets: trickster wand magic wand nod wand pumpkin hats pumpkin weapons pumpkin lanterns pumpkin plants pumpkin food Additions / Removed [YLD-29331] Added: All recipes revealed option for mobile sandbox games. 12. Hey there, Ylanders! We're starting this Dev Diary with the usual greeting, but this Diary will be a bit different, because we're celebrating the big number 200! ??? So this week, we'll be looking back a little bit, but also, we'll look at what lies just ahead of us too. It's a long one but it's also worth reading through! The Ylands team has been hard at work since the very beginning, but especially the last few updates, we have stepped up the consistency and brought you many cool new features. Whether you've been with us since the start of the Ylands or you're a recent addition to our fantastic community, we want to remind you of some of these features. A journey of discoveries Let's venture into the past and have a look at updates 1.3 - Watery Water and 1.4 - Creative Call. These updates brought a lot of features to the Editor part of Ylands, which might not have been the most popular decision back then, but allows us to fully utilize the potential of Ylands in the most recent updates. With 1.4, maaaaaany new assets were also introduced, such as all of the Atlantean assets! Creators Club was also established! Are you a member? In 1.5 we got the Editor and the platform into a state that we were happy with and we started Enhancing Exploration (yep, that was the name of the update!) and created one big Exploration world for your adventure to take place. This was the update, where editor features allowed us to start working on a better Exploration because every update from this point on would bring a huge new feature to Exploration. With that said, it feels like 1.6 came out yesterday. And believe it or not, it's been over 7 months since Trading Territories. With this update we fixed many issues that Exploration had and which were heavily requested by the community, on our part, it was also a confirmation that we are serious about focusing on Exploration much more. Trading Territories also brought vendors into the game, which is particularly useful if you're planning big projects and want to get the necessary resources. Speaking of big projects, 1.6 made sure that Random Encounters make more sense and they became biome-specific. Marvelous Mysteries, the 1.7 update, was jam packed full of new features, improvements and fixes (this Dev Diary is already long enough, so we're only gonna list a few of them). Yet another example of what wouldn't be possible without all the Editor features we have worked on in the past are Mystery Ylands. These yland-sized mysteries, puzzles, dungeons, stories or anything else you want to call them, are incredible creations that will draw you in and won't let go until you've solved them! With 1.7, our mobile players can also enjoy the wonders of Exploration and what's more, switching between mobile and PC is possible. And in case anyone is not sure if they want to commit to the Exploration DLC, we added a demo, which isn't time limited so adventurers can take as long as they need to decide! Not forgetting about our talented creators, we also continue improving Editor tools, this time it was Object Brush, which makes it easy to span a large number of objects over any terrain. In between updates, we also added over 4500 unique entities to the game, ran Creator Competitions, streamed Ylands, answered your questions in various Q&A streams, gave out goodie packs, asked for your feedback, released several patches, showed you a bit of what goes on behind the scenes and well, released 200 Dev Diaries. A perfect transition from what was to what will be is provided by Aleš Ulm, the Project Lead of Ylands: "Seeing how much we've improved the Exploration during this year makes me incredibly proud of our team. In a way, we're returning to a path that we left at some point and we are getting closer to the game we've always wanted to make with every passing day." What lies ahead? Next week is the week we'll finally get to share all the hard work with our players, who can look forward to larger maps, animal companions, Achievements and Titles, Exploration tutorial, mass pick up of items, multiplayer rework and oh so many more quality of life improvements that you, the players, have asked for. Oh, and a beautiful new main menu, it not only looks good but it is functional! We're extremely excited about this update, not only because it symbolizes all that Ylands has achieved and how far we've come, but also because we believe you will love it as much as the CEO of Bohemia Interactive Marek Španěl, who beautifully summarized the journey and told us what he thinks about 1.8 - Awesome Achievements: "A small team of developers started a new project eight years ago that later turned into Ylands. Little could we imagine what an incredible journey it had started. Sometimes, it felt like we were reaching something extraordinary and unique. Sometimes we got utterly lost on the way, and everything looked bleak and hopeless. With update 1.8, I feel like we are getting close to the game's original vision. I think we are only a few more updates away until we can fully realize the nearly infinite potential of Ylands. Big kudos to the entire team for making it happen and the incredible community that stays with us. I hope you will enjoy update 1.8 as much as I do, and I am very much looking forward to what is beyond the horizon. Stay classy, Ylanders." Looking beyond the horizon Speaking of what is beyond the horizon, as we're nearing the release of 1.8, it would be appropriate to tease a little of what is to come in 1.9 and 1.10. All we're gonna say is that in 1.9 we will explore the ocean a bit more and give it some love and by 1.10 we will work on lore and everything we love about Ylands. Any guesses what that might be? ? What we can't forget to mention is to say thank you. Thank you to all of our players who have been with us since the start, thank you to our players who joined during major changes happening in the game, thank you to players who have joined more recently and stuck around and thank you to all future players who will bring a fresh new outlook to the world of Ylands. We can already see an uptake in new players and we hear your positive feedback on the changes we've been making, which makes us not only extremely happy but also very motivated to keep going and to keep bringing more amazing stuff to Ylands! One big thank you also goes out to the team who's worked on Ylands. Without your hard work, there would be no Ylands, so thank you! A lot was said, but as always, one more thing left to say in this Dev Diary and that is... STAY CLASSY, YLANDERS!

Is this in the Experimental build?
  14. Hey there Ylanders! Before the update gets here (soon! ?), as always, we have the experimental build for you to take a sneak peek into the upcoming update. Available to every Steam user, the Experimental branch offers you guys a chance to: test upcoming features & changes test your games & scripts report any bugs & provide early feedback But first, a couple of things to be aware of: How to try the Experimental Build BACK UP YOUR GAME DATA (see below) go your Steam library right-click Ylands select Properties, click the "Betas" tab and enter "ExperimentalIWillBackUpMySaves" as the password (excluding the double quotes) this will unlock the "i_will_back_up_my_saves" branch after selecting the branch and confirming it, Steam will begin downloading the new experimental branch Important information Now is a good time to very strongly urge everyone trying the experimental branch to back up all your game data (saves, scenarios, etc.). You can do that by: browsing to "<steam installation folder>/userdata/<your steam id>" copying the whole "298610" folder. Keep in mind that the experimental environment uses a completely new user database, meaning that the game will require either playing as a guest or creating a new BI account (available through a link in the game) and then creating a new Ylands character. If you leave your saves folder intact, you will be able to load your older saves and scenarios with these caveats: loading older saves will create a new character for you editing scenarios will result in the scenario having more contributors - the user from the live version and the user from the experimental version For these reasons, we very heavily WARN AGAINST using any data created/modified in the experimental branch in the live version. Also keep in mind that since experimental and live environments are completely separate, you won't be able to see your friends playing the live version in the Social tab. With that out of the way...onto the good stuff! Please note: not all features that will be released in the full release are available in the Experimental build. There are also no Mystery Ylands HIGHLIGHTS (once again, this is not the full list of new and improved features that will be released in 1.8!) Main menu overhaul The new menu is on its way to your monitors and displays! We wanted to showcase all the fun that can be enjoyed in Ylands. Let us know what you think about it. Larger maps Because of some serious technical issues, we had to generate ylands with a max size of 3x3 km in the past. Nobody was really satisfied with this limitation. It took us a tremendous amount of hard work, but finally, we can see the results. Ylands may have up to 8x8 km. To make the experience of exploring the vast lands of Ylands more exciting, we have also added more space between the individual ylands. Now you can enjoy the almost never-ending ocean horizon. Mass pickup action Sometimes, the clickfest when picking up things is just a bit too much. From now on, you can collect all the chopped wood by one long RMB hold. And not just wood, it works on all the items of the same name lying close to your avatar. Random default avatar It's a small change but a welcome one. All the new avatars have completely randomized looks. Quality of life gameplay improvements Have you struggled to claim your ship? Or was it hard to find out which ship on the sea is actually yours? Have you been confused within the workstations tabs or have you asked yourself, why is this particular item being held by your avatar hands and another is not? Yeah, we were there too. That's why we checked every detail in the game and made sure that everything was in the right place and the game is consistent on every level. Crafting improvements and fixes As mentioned several times on this page, we focus on the details, like the color difference between the recipe and item in the Hotbar, which should be more intense. There are some other user-friendly changes. General UI polish 46 tasks were created with a detailed description of what should work better in terms of our UI. We haven't changed it much at a first glance, but it works much smoother now. We also add some tips to the loading screens, just to be sure that you haven't forgotten about the mass pickup action we added to this update. ...aaaaaaaaaand more

    EXPERIMENTAL Build - Awesome Achievements!

Hey! So the size limitation is primarily so that we have ylands and not just land Also, that is how the system works, it only loads the terrain around you up to a certain distance And happy you're enjoying the mass pick up, it's pretty handy, right?
  16. Do you see the thumbnail in the editor in the composition list?

    Dev Diary #198 Streaming Schedule

Hey there, Ylanders! A new streaming season is upon us! And we kicked it off with yesterday's Q&A session with Aleš and Nikki. What did we talk about, where to watch it if you missed it live and what is this new streaming season? In yesterday's stream we answered questions about the Editor, Exploration, 1.8 update and more! We started off by answering several Editor questions including those about adding half and quarter blocks, selecting multiple entities based on their color for quick color changes and entity pivot changes. In the Exploration block of questions, you were interested to hear, for example, about eating while sitting down, larger ships, turning off the freecamera on private ylands and also glowing paint being available in Exploration. Apart from these two sections, we also covered changes to clan management, controller and console plans and possible new assets. We also revealed the name of the 1.8 update! If you missed the stream, head over to our Twitch channel to watch it! You can find the stream here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1182006596 This Q&A session was only the first of many streams and it was the start of a new schedule of streams. From now on, we will be streaming every two weeks and will cover a variety of topics with guests from the Ylands (and BI) team. Because we know that you enjoy gameplay streams as well, Nikki will be streaming weekly on our Discord server, so if you'd like to come explore together with her, head over to our Discord! Oh, and speaking of 1.8 and all the good news we have for you guys - especially those playing on PCs. We did say that we'd added some cool optimizations that will make the game run faster in some cases, but we, quite unexpectedly, managed to implement yet another pretty sweet optimization, just before the datalock. This will make your graphic cards utilized more efficiently and we are very happy about this since this will result in many of you getting a quite significant rise in FPS. Stay healthy and stay classy, Ylanders!

    Pet followers

Hey! As of now, pets can only be purchased with coyns (in-game currency) but not with Exploration points. To my knowledge, you don't get pets on Mystery Ylands.
