  1. So ropes... right now they are used in crafting and as decorations... that's it... Ropes would be great to be used to tie things to other things... such as:

    1. Tie the small boat or raft to your ship and drag it along on your trip
    2. Tie a rope around a tamed horse and pull him along with you as you explore the island on foot (I know you can call a horse but this would be more realistic)
    3. Tie up a horse near your base so he doesn't run off before you can build him a pen
    4. Use rope for repelling... (grappling hook) when caving without the propeller pack or flying potions
    5. Lazoo... why not... you could wrangle things and people... great for PvP
    6. Fuses for Gunpowder barrels... make a long fuse... light it and boom
    7. Roping a cave as marker.... when caving you tie the end of a rope to the entrance and follow it back to get out

I'm sure there are a lot more uses but that's a start... :P

  2. I agree completely... either way... helmet / goggles or make linker necessary to see streams... when you unequip it stream go away... seems like the latter solution would be easier.  But the idea of crafting goggles or helmet is nice also

  3. There is also creative mode... where you can choose to play a survival map (or custom generate one) but then have unlimited materials and you don't die... it' good to practice builds in... but now we have force field generator... which helps immensely...

  4. Merry Christmas to you and yours!! Great job so far... I can honestly say that I personally have been impressed by the dev team so far!! Great response time and great job!! Take a break you have earned it!!

Those are good questions - perhaps I'll make a video covering the fringe cases for the barrier generator.

As to why I don't build right there, well, I have a grand vision of a base that consists of about 6 to 8 buildings filling up that whole valley and then some :)

Thanks for the sub! I hope you like what you find.

Looking forward to seeing the build!!

  6. @KingWingit I loved that video... what a crapton of work.  So my thing is why not just build your base right there?  I understand your point but I found (in my singleplayer world) that I just plopped it in  central spot in my already existing base and then I fixed all my previous mistakes.  Now when I add on I have the option of "editing" my work.  Also... I'm not set up to record video but another nice "idea" for a test would be

    1) can you edit existing buildings that are random gen placed? Like if you found a random tiny shack and set up shop there... can you place the barrier encompassing the shack and demolish it?

    2) If you build near the water and you have your ship within the barrier... can that now be edited also?

Those are things to test  :P

Other than that... Awesome video man... I subbed as well!

  7. So... about one month in and here are my $0.02....

    1. Great game so far!  Very challenging, and entertaining with a ton of replay value!
    2. Inventory management... it's challenging to say the least... doable but has room for improvement... on that note:
      • We desperately need a "tool-belt"... I have so many tools and containers in my inventory that at any time I'm leaving something behind due to inventory management... Tool-belt should hold hammer, axe, shovel, etc... it would help SO MUCH!
      • The "soil box"... it would be awesome to have it be a "Mineral Box" and hold dirt, sand, gravel AAAAND iron, copper, gold, sulfur, etc... that would free up many more valuable slots
      • A "Food Satchel".... to hold cooked and uncooked foods... or perhaps "processed" foods? Again... also clear up some inventory space
      • Making stacks that actually stack automatically... now if I move say a half stack of ore from a container to my inventory... it takes up another inventory slot... I have to manually drag it to complete a stack of something already in my inventory... it should be automatic... as it should "auto-stack" when say I pick a piece of stone off the floor and I have a partial stack of stone in my inventory...
      • chests... I have seen some good guides but it would be nice to have the "size" in the description... I have done some personal testing and I know which one the biggest one is but it would have been nice to perhaps have a "tooltip"?
        • on that note... I love the "flavor" of all they types of chests but it would be nice to have multiple sizes of each "flavor"
      • It would be awesome to have a "sort" button... to declutter your bags... maybe alphabetical? or by item type? say all the tools at the top and so on...?
      • I think that's all for inventory management... again, its totally playable and fun as all heck at the moment but I find myself constantly spending time organizing, moving things, and sometimes leaving things behind... I wanna explore not play inventory management 101 :P
    3. Annoyances that have happened to me and workarounds...
      • Falling through the map... It has happened at least a few times... you die... loose everything and have to start over :( super sad Lupowop... I have (once and only once) been falling (it takes a few seconds to die) and smashed ENTER and /unstuck 2... phew... moves you to safe ground but you gotta be super fast...
        • Falling through cannot be reproduced... i tried... it's a random glitch in the map but it has happened to me multiple times and I watched it happen to keralis on one of his videos
      • Dying and being teleported to the original spawn... I don't die a lot anymore but today I was on a polar bear island... the bear ate me (those things thump hard!) and I respawned on my original island... (luckily I built my base there so not too huge of a loss)... my ship is still parked on polar island... (built an pure engine powered small ship and I will go back for the big one later on as its FULL of treasure and loots!)
      • Repeating rifle is under-powered... I'm a huge gun nut and in real life my Henry repeater shoots the SAME bullets as my lever action Remington... they are the SAME bullets... so they both shoot at similar feet per second with the same impact... things that suffer are accuracy (due to barrel length and such) but a repeater hits just as hard as a lever actions... it just fires faster... please please either make "different calibers" or make the bullets do the same damage from all the rifles
      • The button at the bottom left of crafting window that "hints" at "important" recipes to be crafted... there is one missing on the electric bench... very important piece to unlock engines... took me forever to figure out why I didn't have engines
      • When placing something on a boat... you almost sink sometimes... for example... naked hull... I want to place a helm on it and almost sank the hull... I had to place something cheap on it like a log... before I could place the helm.  This happens at anchor, off anchor, shallow water, deep water... its annoying at best... place something "temporary" and try to place the desired item... it has happened with or without stuff built on the hull... not sure what makes this happen... I think it's been written about before.
    4. Wishlist:
      • Ships with HOLLOW hulls!!!
        • right now we are limited in our builds by the "solid" hulls... I think a 1x1x1 edge all around and a hollow hull would allow for some crazy builds!
      • Different hull types
        • both ships are the same... just different sizes... perhaps a "metal" hull something in the yact area?... It would be nice and move the building to a different "flavor"... Don't get me wrong... I have seen some EPIC builds out there... buuut with advancement it would be nice to see metal hulls... maybe a "container" type hull (Big and loong) :P
      • More "wood" angles... I currently build the most with stone... it has a lot of "angle" options... Wood, sadly, is lacking...
      • More "directional" birds
      • Pets!!! More pets!!! I want a parrot on my shoulder and maybe a pet wolf... it would be super nice
      • Saddlebags... self explanatory... I use the heck out of horses... 1st thing I do on new Ylands... tame a horse... slap bags on it and extra storage while scouting the Yland...
      • Let me tie a rope to my (now saddlebagged) horse... I wanna tether him to a tree while I explore that cave... I know you can "call them" but I wanna tie it up while I go caving...
      • This last one is a "dream"... we can build boats and cars and a propeller pack... why not a helicopter... just like the car... make a "chassis" and a "cockpit" and a "motor" and a "large propeller"... then leave the rest up to us... we will build crazy contraptions...

I think that's all I have for now... I am seriously enjoying this game WAY too much...  Great job so far!!

With the  recent  updates, and the availability of Ylands on steam Dec. 6 2017, some of the previous tips  are no longer appicable

It can be frustrating  arriving, not  knowing whats what and ending up as  a predator meal. Hers some tips ...not  spoilers..

    1) Note  your  spawn point and  construct  something to help identify it. This is so later on when you v have items you can  come back and enhance it with items   needed to survive.

During the game,  visit it often and place  some  containers...  put in the containers  superseded weapons... ie   stone  spears    wood spears     etc.  Also put in some  basic  clothing,  a torch, flint lighter,  food  axe  knife and wood pieces  etc. place a marker thats  hightly  visible...and  also add a lantern. if you are so inclined  maybe a small log  shelter.  Some  wooden  spikes will  help to act as a  anti predator  barrier.

    2) Upon  Initial  arrival, look for  grass flint, stone and  sticks.  Craft a knife . then you can fashion a wooden spear .. great for initial defense.  Collect and  store feathers for  later weapons, and stock up on food.

    3) Predators....  if you see sharks near the shore  they could be   guarding an escape  route for a  land  predator  or  two nearby. When  exploring  do not  run   everywhere...  take  small  movements,  keeping to higher areas so you can look down on any predators and  scan around you

    4) weapons ..  spears   are  essential early in the game for  close in defense.    as your crafting   expands.   grab a  sabre....  very  effective against  wolves and  pumas etc.  Crossbows are the best for long  range stealth attack on bears,  but not for  wolves as they will rush you and the  bow /  crossbow  reload  time is  not  quick enough

    5) Predator  characteristics... bears  will awaken and  search for your scent ...   keep back and   kill at long range with a bow/crossbow..   close in combat with a sabre if a surprise attack. Wolves    will growl and warn ....wait then attack ..a sabre  is the best,  a   spear  2nd choice. Try to move to a higher  open area  otherwise your weapon will miss the beast and  strike  nearby  objects  instead.  Wolves are on packs ..if you find one,  scan for others    usually   3  or  4     sometimes more.  Sometimes  they lurk near other predators  like   bears or  pumas etc!  Pumas and   leopards  etc   give little  warning and  spring  surprise attacks   and  can be  hard to see ..if  you are at a safe distance   a  bow/crossbow   is effective.  Again  after  killing one,  scan for other predators  before  claiming the hide and meat.

6)Storage of items in your base .. I craft stone letters    to identify whats in any container ..which i place around the walls  (  cu = copper, fe=  iron  Sa   = saltpeter,   etc     also  cabinets with tools ) Place a  container  with  wood  pieces and  any ores  close to  your  smelter/ forge/.kiln

    7)  doors...  construct them to keep unwanted  animals  out..  place near them  spears to grab in an emergency

    8)  Build your  base on a shoreline where there's a  deep water area  nearby ... construct a   dockyard where you can  build  your ships and  use place tp put in temporary  wooden poles as a barricade   around your  dock  entrance to keep sharks  out  while  you are  building.

Construct a tower  on your  base    fitted with  lanterns or  other forms of   lighting,  to make   your  base  locatable   from land or  sea approach. Place   columns with lamps  at the  entrance of your dock  as a guide.

    9)  construct  multiple  weapons and their  ammo for  placement on you  base, ship, and  spawn point..  so you have  something to   use  if you  lose a battle  with a predator  etc.  When  exploring, only  take with you  essentials...

10 )  craft a map  and pencil and place in dynamic  area ..  to  record  where you are.. check map often to see where you are in case you get " terminated"  and therefore you will have an idea where t your tombstone is  and you can recover  your  items.  Check to see if your penci is not   broken ..if it is your map may not  update

    11) when stopping to read map or  eat,  choose a elevated point where you can have  uninterrupted  360 degree view around you,  to  thwart any surprise attack by  lurking predators.

    12)  sharks  will attack your  boat especially  if  you are sleeping on it.. or  away from the helm  feeding... place helm and  any sleeping  bed a  good  distance from stern.  If you put a brazier on your ship  to keep warm,   make sure its  covered 3 sides from the weather.   Put containers  around the sides of  you ship as a  barrier  to prevent   falling off  your  ship.

whew   that's all for  now    others will ad more tips  for  sure.   have  fun!:D

    Addendum:

If you encounter a  strange  bug or  glitch,  copy   your   logfile  to an  area in the forums  before you try and re log ..( its location etc   can be found in  correspondence  there)   ..that way the developers  will see the data that caused  the  issue,  as that file  is  automatically  cleared  on log in

Great updated list... I would like to add (for new players)

    1) Find Aloe Vera and "other berries and fruits" that heal you.  This is a LOT more easily accessible than cloth at times and you can make aloe vera salve to heal you

    2) Get into alchemy ASAP.... Healing potions, etc... are a must for caving!

    3) Make bandages and repair kits, they stack well and should always be carried.

    4) on boats there is a trick that is credited to Keralis on youtube... Build a Sideways door on the side of your ship and open it for a quick getaway and easy shark killing if you don't want to build a bulky wall and stairs... Either way works well though

  9. Just finished watching the last episode... I agree... he is amazing.  And I LOVE that he is not so interested in progression and end game but rather focuses on exploration, building, and just having fun!  You all need to figure out how to fix his shark and bunny infestation problem!!  He is getting audibly frustrated at having to kill sharks and bunnies all day long! :P

Thankfully I have not seen this issue in any of my builds... but yes... what an absolute inspiration he is... I cannot wait until we see more from him.

  10. @Paula Voytek, try using the J,K,L keys or holding down the H or G key and using RMB to change the rotation.  Once you discover this trick building goes to another level.  For roofs you can use the longer triangles and flip them on their side to alter elevations like 2 tall 2 wide 1 deep or 2 long by 1 tall by 1 deep.  There are also corner pieces and then you can just go crazy with elevation mix.  Also i tend to do temporary frames to make sure centering is correct.  This helps a lot on placement

(unfortunately there’s currently no way for characters in already active games to acquire it - you will have to start a new one)

I put 60 hours into my original world I am not starting over to get a barrier why can't you guys add it in so I do not have to start a new world. That makes no sense. 60 hours into my server/world. Tons of people are on my server playing from time to time put time and effort onto their bases now we just have to start from scratch again ? Can you guys please Fix this so we do not have to start a new world?

As much as this sux it is to be expected in an Alpha of any game.  Any building game in alpha will undoubtedly call for server restarts, wipes, and plain ol "all your stuff needs to be redone in order for you to keep playing".... This has always been the case in online alpha building games.   It hurts to see may hours gone to waste but it's the price we pay for having such a good game before it is fully released :).  The upside is that this is a very rapid response from a Development team that OBVIOUSLY listens to its fanbase and customers... this is Very, VERY positive indeed

  12. Hey all,

so playing a little tonight and I'm seeing a possible issue and I was wondering if anyone else saw this.  So in single player I have been sleeping, then exiting and it auto saves as usual but when I log back in to the game I loose about a day worth of construction?  I'm not sure of the sequence exactly but it's happened a couple of times for sure... I will build for a day (from sunup to sundown) and I go to sleep... I then exit the game and it states (your game will be saved)... when I log back in im asleep on my bed but I have lost all of the building progress from the previous day (i still have mats in inventory).  So far I have replicated this 2x back to back.

    anyone else see this?

Oh yes yes... The tape station and Turbo Load (made me feel like such a hacker that I knew that haha :D). I also played hours and hours of Boulder Dash on the C64... After that we got an Amiga 500 with floppy disk :o ... oh, the times of patience and bad gfx :D

oh that was and has been half the fun of being around in those days... I simply LOVE watching gfx progress from 2 lines and a dot to the realism(ish) that is found in a game like ARK Survival... I vividly remember jumping when the zombie dobermans busted through the hallway window in the very first Resident Evil came out on playstation one... and games like Duke Nukem were over the top next gen graphics!  Now in in it more for the content

Oh the locksmith bench has a bunch of nifty stuff. Primarily firearms-related stuff, but also the powered mining drill which is really neat, but it requires a ylandium charging station to recharge its power. I'm sure there are others, think of it more like as a tinkerer work station, its not just about keys and locks but delicate mechanical work in general.

oh heck ya... I'm all over it... hadn't even thought of guns... i know I need sulfur and saltpeter to get gunpowder (I assume) but my Yland has nothing so I'm preparing for exploration.  I have found a cave with some mutated hyenas and I assume thats where ylandium comes from.  i still need to unlock the soldering iron and various other doodads to progress (i think).  I'm getting there but so far I'm really enjoying just putzing around and watching my little starter spot grow bigger and bigger every day.  I do wish I had some lights though... cave mushrooms only illuminate so much :)

  15. So cannons... they are loud!  and fun and you can break things with them... I'm loving them so far... it would, however, be epic if later down the crafting tree there could be a "cannon linkage" where it would link say 3 to 4 cannons together so that you could load them all up, man one and fire that one and they all would move and fire together... It would make PvP a lot more fun in ship battles where there are multiple cannons on a ship and only a few players to man the ship

Ha... you guys have nothing on me when it comes to being old :P

My very first game ever played was Pong on a console connected directly to the tv... and the console could play only.... Pong :D

Some years after that we got our first computer - a C64 with tape station where my most played game was Bruce Lee :P

@hallie HA!  I was just about to say the same thing!  Pong was 1st game console my cousin had and 1st console game I ever played... My first "computer" was the Commodore 64 and then I got an Atari 2600.  I vaguely remember playing some hunted house text based game on a friend's Apple when they first came out... remember loading up magnetic tapes on those old buggers??? And yes I Played the heck out of Bruce Lee on the C64... that was the only game we had if I remember correctly.

  17. Hi all, Lupowop here...

...long time survival game player and veteran of Minecraft, Survivalcraft, ARK, Stranded Deep, etc...  Bought Ylands as soon as it hit Steam and loving it ever since!  The community is awesome and I'm absolutely in love with the game so far!  I can't wait to see what the Ylands crew has in store for us.  See you all in forums and hopefully in game someday

  18. @hallie, L, K, and J flip and rotate (not sure which ones do which atm) so ya you can flip logs vertical, you can rotate, flip, mirror all the pieces.  It was an "aha!" moment for me... I have been building with the "littlest" pieces and you can get pretty darn intricate details with those.  Still learning though so... not gunna post anything until I have something comparable to your place :)

be warned make sure you only do it on a new save. It is only working for me when I go to game options and erase my progress. Some people it erases their save all together. So only do it on new saves. Some people says it works for them others say it doesn't. Here is a little 1 mintue video showing how it works for me.

@Dustin Michael... so I tried this step by step and it does not work for me :( Perhaps your cheekyness has been patched?  :(

@Velociferis right, by your list it sounds like you're primarily missing the ones that are made out of glass. From memory, I think you're missing the one for potions, the one for seashells and the one for pigments / dyes. No wood container yet as far as I can tell. There's also a keyring that predictably acts as a container for keys, that I think is made at the forge.

@vforventura I had totally forgotten about those because I keep those in storage whereas I carry the others around.  I do have the glass ones as well.  I can make the keyring as well but haven't bothered to make the locksmith bench yet as I am assuming that's for multiplayer primarily?  If I need to make it for progression let me know and I'll work on that tonight :)

     Thanks for the reply!

  21. @hallie I'm trying to emulate some of your design elements in my build.  My problem is I keep "squirreling".... "oh look what is that"....  So have you found that chopping down tall trees with a saw yields more logs than with an axe?  I was trying to test that last night but its so hard to replicate.  I also discovered the J, K, and L keys... they have become my friends... as is "freeplacing".  I too replant trees... have you found that they need to be a certain space apart for maximum growth?  I'm trying to make a tree farm nearby my base but my tall trees don't seem to grow as tall as they were originally... maybe i gotta wait more?
