    Dev Diary #23

First of all, congrats to the entire Ylands team on finally releasing on Steam I'm happy to see good overall reviews and sales. Where possible I've tried to explain the monetization in a fair way, but I understand that a lot of game developers have been too greedy in the past. One request I can make for the upcoming updates is to really try to push the MP updates and fixes. The earlier we can start to have Ylands communities and dedicated servers, the better. Some questions for 6.2: With the release of the barriers, will there finally be an easy way of deconstructing our own placed blocks?

    RESOLVED Rendering issues

The issues with the sleeping mat are also common with sails, I think actually with any block that can have it's model "altered" by some form of action. I believe the easy way to fix this is to take the "large" variant of the model to calculate whether it should be rendered or not.

    Just like dayz

I expect that with the multiplayer updates there will be ways to enforce a more PVE oriented game, maybe with certain PVP parts In the mean time I advice you to just get some food and build a raft ASAP to leave spawn island. Most aggressive players only stay at spawn island for their 10 minutes of fun.

    Beds and buildings

Heya! To get started you need some tools and some items. I advise making a basic stone toolset, so an axe, pickaxe and a knife. Later on a hammer and saw are handy as well. Some of the crafting items are key to most recipes. Examples of these things are rope (made from grass), wooden planks, wooden poles and later on nails. Some recipes need certain crafting stations (cloth is a good example, which needs a spinning wheel and a weaving loom). If there's any specific questions feel free to ask!

Don't get too greedy! (In-game store)

Although at first many other Ylanders were skeptical as well, the devs have come up with pretty good answers to our (quite harsh)feedback as you can read here: I believe that the actual prices are very fair for what you get. If we take €5 = 1000 Coyns, then 1 Coyn is only half a eurocent. Especially the consumables are cheap, seeing that you can soon buy 10 chairs for 20 coyns, each chair is only 1 cent. The emotes and weapon skins are more expensive, but I feel like they are more of a novelty. Besides this, it's a way for content creators and server hosts to earn some Coyns as well. I'm currently renting a server to host a 24/7 dedicated server as soon as the server packages are released, which costs me quite a bit of money. If people really like playing there and they want to contribute, instead of spending IRL money they could support the server by spending Coyns, which they could have earned by selling mods or compositions to other players It's more of an ingame economic system than just a pay2win store to be fair. I believe that if you got time and creativity on your hands you could end up having all the things you want without spending any real life currency If you got any more concerns please be sure to join the discussion in the FAQ topic! Kick/Ban

    Just type /cmdlist ingame
  7. WijkagentAdrie

    Kick/Ban

There's no admins on the official servers. On your own server you as an admin can use /kick "name" or /ban "name" to get rid of those players.
  8. WijkagentAdrie

Did you remove some /cmd ?

I could do with some time and commands, to make it easier to record things. I've made a scenario in the editor but for some reason the default weather is always rainy. So before I can take screenshots/record I first have to wait quite some time.

    Streaming sites allowed ?

In the EULA it says e.g. youtube and twitch which means for example. It doesn't exclude other platforms, so therefor it should be okay Here's the text from the EULA: You may create footage (screenshots and videos) of the game and share it online (e.g. on YouTube or Twitch). We reserve the right to take down such footage in case it shows or promotes hacking, cheating or any other distasteful, obscene or unlawful behavior. We give you permission to make money (e.g. advertisement revenues) from this footage, but only if you add enough of your own content (for example commentary) to the footage which would justify it.

    Early Access plans!

Awesome! Could you perhaps include anything on making the world's ecosystem more robust? As in, have plants very slowly grow in the right biomes even without seeds? For example if the starter island hasn't got any cotton anymore, it could regrow really slow to keep playability up on bigger MP servers. Same goes for animal respawning For ores I was thinking about making them very abundant on for example the polar islands and on the sea bottom. You should be able to get some to start from the islands, but to get vast amounts for huge projects it would be nice to go to these "tougher" places.

    Early Access plans!

For the exploration: will there be "infinite" generated worlds? Or maps that are waaaay bigger, with 50+ islands, some being a lot larger than the islands we have now?
  12. WijkagentAdrie

    Dedicated Server Files ?

Devs confirmed both that the dedicated server files won't be updated before the steam release, and also confirmed that there will be a command line version

    respawn beacon?

Could respawning on a ship be a thing as well? And maybe a way to find your corpse, because that can sometimes be even more difficult. I don't always remember where I run when I'm getting chased by bears Also some changes to ships, because a few ships have gone missing after *incidents* Maybe have ships slow down and stop when there is no player in X amount of distance? And mark them on a map for example? Adrie
  14. Hello, I've found quite a big problem I believe: I'm trying to run previously working maps (the test map for the ship stats) in the editor but I keep getting errors about game logic: "INVALID GAME LOGIC OBJECTS NEED TO BE FIXED FIRST" "[EVENT LISTENER 1 ID:4] ENTITY REFERENCED IN FIELD OBJECT DOESN'T EXIST". This exact game logic used to work before last update I've also deleted all game logic, replaced all the blocks but the error keeps appearing. I've added the logs. I'm trying to make a system where if I shoot at an archery target, certain blocks move up an X amount of blocks. Adrie output_log.txt output_log_clean.txt
  15. Thanks, I will try the workaround after work today

How does the multiplayer survival work?

Sounds fair! I 100% agree that this kind of MP experience will greatly boost the game, and that kind of gameplay/interaction is what I was after when I bought Ylands I don't know if you've had a look at the dev diary's and the sneak peak's yet, but the development of Ylands is going very fast overall. I think this is mainly because of the rather basic feel of the game and because it's in Unity. Anyways, the developers confirmed that one of the first things they will be working after the steam release + the first major buxfixes will be the dedicated servers: I've heard elsewhere on the forums that on launch there will be some sort of deal (maybe some Coyns? maybe a better price?) on launch. Seeing as MP improvements may close this may be a good deal Adrie

How does the multiplayer survival work?

At the moment it's very coop like indeed! Due to some resources not respawning and being limited at the moment I feel that the game isn't ready for 64 player games, but I believe that this will come in a future update I think that as soon as the steam release is there, the multiplayer experience (including the dedicated server) will get a lot of improvement and I hope this includes all the things we need to make communities like the ones you see in Minecraft!

    RESOLVED 0.6 bugs

Regarding the painting not working: I now see what I did wrong. The way the painting tool in the editor works is substantially different compared to the painting tool while playing. I thought that just like in the editor, I could for example paint both layers a different color with 1 click. Using the correct setting makes it work. This makes sense when you think about it, but when you first used it in the editor it is confusing. Maybe add this to the codex? And now for the last "error": I first made an identical car to the one I used on your server in a new creative session, hosted by myself. It's a simple car, 2 engines, 2 seats, a front and a trunk. I've wired it all up and it worked, both the trunk started moving (the cogwheels on it) and the lights were on, although indeed the lamps themselves look black. Then I went on the dedicated server and tried it with the same car: Initially I thought the lights were working, but the cogs weren't spinning. I then took my helmet off to check whether the light wasn't coming from there, and indeed the light beam was from my helmet and not from the car: The engine is running in this picture! I checked all my energy streams and they are there and they are exactly the same as on my singleplayer car. In the last picture you can see the engine being on and the actual energy line being there, but the energy line itself won't turn on. I tried to manually start the engines from outside the car and inside but the lights wouldn't switch on. As this is on the dedicated server I don't think there is much priority in fixing this as it does work in single player. I've also attached logs, I rebooted the game just to test this to get fresh logs If there's any more questions, feel free to ask! Adrie output_log.txt output_log_clean.txt

    RESOLVED 0.6 bugs

Regarding this issue: I've tried it and it literally instantly happened, logs are attached. To reproduce: Open up the editor, Generate new terrain, Place a ship, Place a stone block wall on there (but works with any block), Paint some blocks, Use Ctrl+Z to undo the painting. After undoing, instead of unpainting the blocks, they completely disappear. I'm now gonna have a look at the car chassis one. Adrie output_log.txt output_log_clean.txt

    RESOLVED 0.6 bugs

For the car chassis: This was on a server hosted by you guys, using the paint gun, For the second quote, this was in the actual savefile I've sent you earlier. I was editing a explore game file in the editor. Also note, those items were actually placed on ships! If you look at the ships in the file you can see that after saving and then closing the map and reopening it some blocks reappear inside other blocks. The third one is the same as the second one. I will make a new world either tonight or tomorrow and have another try, especially at #2 and #3. This world is a few updates old so I'll have a look whether I can reproduce it with a fresh world, both while editing a new editor scenario as well as editing an explore map. How would I find the log for this? Would it be the normal output_log.txt or the output_log_clean.txt? I have played on other servers in the mean time. Adrie

    RESOLVED 0.6 bugs

I've had this same thing happen to me today with a ship that has never been copy pasted Only the first few blocks I've colored have stayed on the ship. I saved my game, loaded up a new world, then went back to the saved game. This is all in the editor. Also, some blocks are glitching into each other: blocks I've deleted have been undeleted and are clipped into the blocks I've placed after deleting those blocks. I'll send my savegame to Ane so you can have a look. Definitely one to put high on the list as there's nothing more frustrating than losing a lot of work due to something like this. Adrie

    RESOLVED [YLD-7629] Host unreachable =(

Are you hosting dedicated? There will be no update for the dedicated server yet as the dedicated still needs more work, and bug fixes having priority for the Steam release. The lead designer said this about it (I marked it in bold): Adrie

    RESOLVED 0.6 bugs

Hmm, I've found quite a frustrating bug... Yesterday when painting my ship, i started painting a few blocks, when I realized that I'd better make a copy of it to have a backup. So I copied it, dragged it and then started painting. When I was done I saved the world, and then shut down the game. (I always manual save, check it saves, then click exit game and when it prompts to save again I click no). Today when I logged back in I found my ship being unpainted, they do have the few painted blocks before I made the copy though.

    0.6: Countless Colors (16/11/2017)

Here's a few screenshots of my sail yacht Chernogorsk with a fresh new coat of paint I've also added a small wooden gate that can block access to the living room and the bedrooms. Also, he/she who came up with the "palette" button is a genius, it makes it so easy to come up with a working palette for large builds and apply it on the go. +rep to you

    RESOLVED 0.6 bugs

In the editor: Painted a chair, pressed ctrl+z to undo, chair disappeared. Even redoing won't bring my chair back. The same just happened to a vase and a bunch of stone blocks.
