An awkward message from a longtime fan

The fix for Explore is super easy. You are so close right now. Frankly, I don't have the skill set to do it, or I would have already. Besides, the scripting info out there is really stale and no longer applies, so it makes it harder, but I'm trying. Oh, look! Bigfoot is in his little house over there, just like the elf said. If you bring him a red crystal, he will tell you how to kill the Crabkin in the underwater cave where the golden idol is. Every time you generate a new Explore game, the elf might spawn. When he does, so does Bigfoot and the rest of the quest, but the spawn points vary randomly, of course. There are over 100 quests. Any 20 of them might spawn at game start. Plus, if your player-made building is super cool, we might add it to the official list. We might use it as the boss lair, or the quest givers house. The Explore world doesn't need to be big to be interesting. Every bear has a 2% chance of dropping just the right hide to make a backpack. Randomly timed re-spawns and random loot drops, like that golden saber the lowly pirate dropped (5% chance). Explore already does random extremely well, this just provides a reason to explore. The old lighthouse keeper once had a sword that killed Crabkin, but it's broken now. Sigh. Even if Explore is not the direction the game is going, this is an easy fix that showcases the possibilities scripting and creating. Easy for you, anyway. Scripting needs more info/help.

    Save a composition

Save Composition is on the left hand drop down menu below Group options. Thank you, me. You are quite welcome.

    Save a composition

I did it before. Now things changed. How do I save a composition? Selected it, dropped the menu composition menu down. I see my previous ones. I type in a new name, it give instructions to select "save". I see no way to do that. Right click, nope. Drag it, nope. I must be missing something obvious, but it sure isn't obvious where to find it. Help? Thanks.

What makes you enjoy the Exploration mode?

Not a fanboy of anything. Question was what do you enjoy in exploration. I enjoy the risk of death and a bit of tension. What I don't like is super easy wander around, pick flowers, build a blueprinted house again. It doesn't offer any feeling of accomplishment to me, although it's great for kids. Do it once, it's boring. To each his own. Just saying that veteran mode is way too easy and feels like tourist mode, so I offer suggestions on how to improve it. Make a hardcore mode. So no, not Ew.

What makes you enjoy the Exploration mode?

What I love: My last explore game, on veteran, I died and dropped my all stuff. When I came back to get it, naked in the freezing cold, it was being guarded by three monsters. Best game ever! I managed to cheap shot my way out of a tough spot and it would have been much better if I was forced to remake all my equipment, but still. Exciting! We NEED a solo hardcore mode. Begin the game shipwrecked beside a dying fire on a frozen island. No resources. No food, no way to make clothing, no way of killing the roaming monsters, only a raft washed up somewhere on the shore that you must find before you freeze or starve. (It's the level 3 island at the end of the game, you see a castle is the distance, that is your final goal, but for now you must leave). Cut the view distance way back so you cannot see the other islands until you are really close. No planting, no map, no birds, a basic compass, much less metal ore located at the very end of the appropriate cave. (No one needs to build a car or a huge ship, we just eventually need some bullets). If I die, I must begin all over again on the first island with nothing. Those seem like simple changes to implement. It would make a huge difference. Please consider doing this! If it is too tough, you can always dial it back, but, in my experience, people will rise to the challenge. Multiplayer explore hardcore should be brutal. You must hunt together or die. Corpse recovery? You need friends to help you. Monsters should have triple the hitpoints or come three to five at a time. More metal, but only at the end of caves. Monsters respawn on a timer, especially in caves. Of course, that's only my opinion. I have absolute faith in, and respect for, your vision. Thank you for many hours of enjoyment thus far.

    Entity Template?

Ah, silly me, I was looking under game logics in scripting. Thanks so much for taking the time to help!

    Entity Template?

How do I create an entity template? I see the spawn script and a dropper for game logic entity template, but I am unable to find anything in game logic called entity template. Thanks.
  8. I chortle with glee. I can't wait. They look so cool. Grinning. I am. Gosh. my haiku. for you. respond accordingly, please in haiku format.

    Workshop Review

Can we include downloaded compositions others have posted?
  10. I feed him and brush him, but then he gets mad and yells and throws me down and a tiger ate me. Why does he throw me off? What am I doing wrong? Did he see a snake? WILD STALLIONS! (guitar riff)
  11. Veteran mode for explorer is AWESOME. Plenty of rough edges, but it feels like it's coming together nicely. If I had a wish list, veteran mode would also include: Toggle for no animals, clay, cloth or food on starting yland (spawn naked on a raft preferred). Toggle for "no map mode", forcing you to pay attention to your surroundings and search (a little) for other ylands. This alters play style a lot, you don't want to be lost at sunset. Toggle for "no planting mode", making foraging vital and encouraging the exploration of every bit of the yland while saving up healing materials. Smaller deposits of ores only show up in the bottom strata of the cave, guarded by alpha(s). Make crab armor and stone armor a useful part of the progression (delay iron). I play with a few more restrictions and find that they add difficulty and excitement, but are playable. I sleep in a bed only if I find one, making death matter more. I never build any structures to kill animals from, but I will use the terrain if I must. All of these changes together will make you pay attention and fear death, which makes things much more exciting. If I had to choose just one, it would be "No planting", as it has a huge effect on how you play and explore. You can't just kill everything and waste all your heals before you reach the polar wasteland. I would also like to see an endgame, so you know that you won. Otherwise it is just a let down as you say "Well, I guess that's it?" We need a fancy crown or some reward. Keep up the good work! I can't wait for the next update!

  13. Speaking only for myself, after 1000+ hours of this game, there is nothing to explore or survive. Repeating the crafting tree again isn't interesting and survival presents no challenges whatsoever. Once you tire of making things no one will see, all that is left is to log onto an empty server and look at some buildings someone made and log off, depressed about the broken game. While I don't steal or grief, I can understand that the small thrill this might give is the only interesting thing left to do. After a few minutes, I "wuss out" and log off in a remote spot or in the ocean, but some folks just want to say "I was here" and leave their character as a calling card. All symptoms of boredom, in my opinion. Looking forward to the update, I check almost everyday and daydream about it. I hope it can revive this game and give people the entertainment they are obviously looking for.
  14. New water looks more like water. Old water looked much cooler. One of the main reasons I fell in love with Ylands was the water. Quite a few times I justsat on the beach and watched the sun rise/set just because it was beautiful. A lot of the artwork has changed, some for the better, but I miss the water the most. Maybe it's just me.
  15. I added extra animals. Every time I get anywhere near them, I start stuttering/freezing like crazy. Once I get away from them, it gets better, just like it used to do a year or so ago.
  16. I generated an explore map in editor, modded a survival scenario on an island. Eventually you escape to the second island. But, in TEST mode, when I die on this second island and click "respawn", I end up back on the original island. I tried creating "Spawn point 2" on the second island, but then when I test I just start off on the second island already. What am I doing wrong? Will this work any differently in an actual game? Many thanks for your advice.

Help me respawn in my scenario?

Thank you! I watched Red Eagle's video about teleporter scripting and set up island wide trigger zones to reset the spawn point. Perhaps there is a more graceful way to do it, but that worked. Thank you both for your help.

Can I adjust animal run speed?

Ah. Thank you! Well.....I guess the issue isn't run speed after all. Even at -80 speed the leopard doesn't hit me, it just follows me around. Running is miserably slow, but I can somersault my way around at full speed which defeats any purpose anyway. All the animals do now is follow you around no matter how slow you run. They only bite if you stand still.
  19. New path finding is great, so I made a map with lots of predators to fight, but now they just follow me around in packs. They never catch me, never hurt me even though I am naked. No challenge at all. Can I make them go faster (or myself slower)? Signed, The Pied Piper

    Hate my hair

My fabulous, bouncy red pigtails, which bounced with every step (did I mention they bounced) are no more. Now I have emo hair, which I hate. I still look great in a blue beret, but it's not the same. The new face is great, but I can't do a thing with my hair. Wish I could reselect, now that the choices changed. Life is filled with regrets I guess. Love you guys! Great update!

    CIrcular staircase

How do I rotate correctly to make one center pole on a circular staircase? I am randomly able to do it using the reference point, but mostly it wants to rotate on a corner of the group. I need to spin like a clock from the center. I cannot figure out what I am randomly doing right. Thanks for the help it is driving me nuts.

Thank you so much for helping Much to learn.
  23. Some games, even very broken ones, have very good or interesting mechanics which generate tension or are fun. What I like best about Ylands is that you can use some of those mechanics. Dungeons of the Unforgiven (5.25 floppy disc) Every step is a possible random encounter. Difficulty increases with depth as does the random loot. Make it back alive with loot. Random heals, if any. Everquest. 3 linked mobs, each on a 7 (?) minute respawn timer. If you delay the killing of the third one a little, the timers become disjointed and the group spawn can be broken into single spawns. The difficulty of each mob varies, so some spawns can be very tough to break. A time limit is thus placed on combat and you must keep up with the spawn rate if you are going to grind, or kill twice as fast to make forward progress down a tunnel with repeated groups within aggro distance. If they repop behind you, you die and all your belongings remain on your body until you come get them. Hurtworld. Everything kills you, first it's the cold, then the heat, radiation, etc. Each zone requires special gear you craft. If you don't have it all, you die if you go in the next zone. The less gear you have, the faster you die. PvP of course. Armed gangs in pickup trucks with lights nightly rampaging through newbie zones was the end game. Ylands can't do quite all of those things, but enough to use those mechanics to make games. I think that is one of Ylands greatest strengths. Can you think of any other cool game mechanics that might work? I have been messing around with water, using it to flood chambers and chase you along a pathway. I like the idea that you could leap from a cliff and survive only if you cut the water on first and land in it, that type of thing.
  24. 770 hours played, I say only one thing. Please enable the full editor for Explore games. Please. Explore games: Boring building game. Maybe it will improve later, but currently way too boring to endure, a sad truth. This could give it life right now. Scenario: Generate 5 islands. All the same climate. No caves. Not suitable for full length games. No way to have different climates, ruins the long game. If I could use the real editor, I could post a full blown multiplayer Sharegame with respawning custom enemies, traps, treasures, random structures, imported compositions, scripting, etc. Please allow the full editor for Explore games. Seriously. I know there is a roadmap and I have faith, but I can't play the game anymore like it is and I am sad about that. Please allow the editor. Thank you.
  25. You can't really edit a Sharegame now, here is why. Once you yourself spawn, you destroy your creation. The second person has a crappier time, the third finds a wasteland. This ruins the long game. This degradation is a fundamental issue with the entire Explore game genre. Limited resources work very well for PvP, but I really need that bear to respawn after I move on, so the next guy can kill it. Even if I edit in 50 bears, it does not fix the issue. I can build mountains of iron, dense forest, I got that part covered. I need respawn. Plus, you need the logics to make it a unique, fun game. But, even with the full blown editor, that is a lot of work and it takes 10-30 hours easy to do it right. Sliders would help. Let's say a big Difficulty slider and as you move it you see it affects lots of small sliders, like Hunger and Temperature Sensitivity and Animal Hit Points, which can all be adjusted individually. Flora slider for Trees, Undergrowth, Food, Herbs. Fauna Slider for animal populations in their appropriate habitat, check box for auto respawn would be awesome. Five minutes later you have a custom Sharegame. The absolute best part about that is that it is unknown to YOU and you can actually explore it yourself instead of knowing everything already. But, that is a dream. I would really love to just able to fully edit a Sharegame.
