Anyone else with a shark problem?

Well... guess the iron spikes around the stern of the hull are useless when they can fly! ..also another one came up from underneath and tried to eat my feet through the deck ....

  3. Well it happened again! 5 days hard work lost! fell through earth and died ...again! Looks like i have to go into a cave and try to find my corpse ..if i can find the cave entrance or area Was coming back after mining ore and was collecting cotton on the way ..and within sight of my ship ... and suddenly sank through the earth ...and landed somewhere where something clobbered me... respawned and went back to area... theres a cave nearby so might have to find a way through it to where my corpse is, otherwise i lost the lot Chances of finding very low!. very frustrating! Log file attached. would be appreciated if i could be resurrected ... prior to the "swallowing" output_log.txt
  4. Letting you know the the sinking and stuck in the ground issue happened twice to me in the last hour...fortunately i had a spade and dug myself out. I had a full inventory, and was carrying back to my base a load of marble rock and dirt ..could that have something to do with the issue? When i decided to log out, i got after the save message a pop up a widows message "Ylands.exe has stopped working etc..

Another view of the dock..pier area.... its only just wide enough for my ship,, but surprisingly easy to sail in and out In the background is my base ... there's plans for a 2nd story. But all put on hold until i find some more ores etc... early no iron ore on this island!...but luckily enough on a nearby island. Another tip ...always include spare weapons on your ship in case you get mauled to death by a wolf / puma/ panther etc. I suspected one was nearby as sharks were waiting in the water nearby to block any escape. Sure enough one attacked from the shadows ..i managed to dispose of it only to be slain by two others! Made it back to my ship on respawn and grabbed a spare spear... returned and dispatched one panther ...but before i could recover my loot etc the third arrived out of nowhere and got his revenge. Upon respawn i was moving back to my ship hoping to get another spear when that elusive panther No. 3 jumped me again - .and i had no weapons !! Believe it or not, i punched him with my bare hands ..one hit and he dropped! So .. here's a warning ...watch out for me on a dark night after i have been drinking

This is a map of my island... the top right hand area that is brown is reclaimed land from the ocean, and you can see the shape of my dock/pier. The next screenshot shows the reclaimed area around the dock planted with bananas and corn. Hope this gives you all ideas and helps.
  8. Another instance of porosity. The roof had endured at least a dozen rain storms , then this .... i noted that the pattern matches a structure on the roof.

Need help navigating? Found your island, but where is your base? If your home base is on a coastline, try leveling land nearby for cotton/ flax/ food plantations .. then use the dirt collect to build out into the ocean, as far as you can, covering any shallow water or shoals and leaving a deep water channel to your dock / pier. Reclaimed land like this appears brown on your map, and with clever placement of a large amount you can actually make signs pointing towards your base and dock entry. You can also level this reclaimed land and use it for food / resource plantations. Also plant on the shoreline palm trees... in groups of even numbers on one side ..and odd numbers on the other .. the number increasing the farther the distance from your base. So when you approach your island and see a cluster of trees odd in number then you know you are possibly to the right of your base... look for the next group ..if its more, then you are moving away ... so turn back and follow the groups with decreasing numbers to you base. A tower on the end of your pier with a lantern ..or better still one of those glowing crystals, will help navigating in bad weather. I make my dock "U shaped, wider than my ship and one side high ( deck) level, and the other at waterline level ... and back my ship into it. make sure the waterline level has a raised area and a wall to escape any sharks that follow you in and try to grab you when dis-embarking. Also dumping dirt under the pier thwarts lurking sharks. Will post a screenshot of my efforts after i tidy my build up a bit .

Bottoms up ! This little piggy has a drinking problem! Was woken up by something dangerous in my abode.. when i clicked wake up ... there was a horse standing on top of me in bed! (reminiscent of "The Godfather" movie by that was a horses head.. this was an entire horse!) Unfortunately, it bolted out the door before i could react to capture a screenshot..

    A Few Questions..

Another trick ...build a stonemasons thing next to where you extract stone/marble. When it gets to become an ugly scar on the land and too deep, make a lot of decorative stone panels ... use them to cover the pit, and place on top a reasonable layer of dirt, which you flatten and turn into a plantation for flax/cotton/grains/corn Also use excess dirt to extent land and make a "U " shaped harbor with a deep sea entry opening... place decorative stone block just above sea level to line the docks and make the opening wide enough to back your ship into . Place 2 towers with lanterns at entry to aid in location/navigation. Decorate around the area with flora...and you have a shark/free place for boarding..exiting your ship. If your ship has a "security" curtain around it, make it one thickness higher than the dock so its easy to get in and out and the ship not getting fouled. Use the sand for glass windows on ships/building ..also to craft a torch ... then you can make a mining helmet I carry a lot of stone panels in boxes on my ship ...so when i find a new island to explore i can build a ramp from shore to the ship to avoid sharks etc You will discover more each time you play I am currently getting screen freezes ..i wonder if its got anything to do with those Chinese posters trying to spam the forums or BI servers? - or doing a DDOS attack ?

    A Few Questions..

@Eriugam ... Gather the seeds , and replant them! 1 tree will drop 3 seeds. Use your axe to destroy stumps to allow room for them to grow. I like to gateher up stuff like that and store it in a specific area as i am sure it becomes necessary in crafting future items ( ie resin for crossbow bolts... wood pieces to feed forges and smelters etc.) Flatten ground with an iron shovel ... the spade digs holes, and a shovel will flatten the ground if there's more than 2 level areas around it. To hotkey an item ie axe weapon or food, select it in inventory, and equip then use mouse button. There's probably other ways but that's the way I do it You can die from starvation, freezing, drowning, excessive high temperatures from forges - if too close, falling, and becoming the food for predators. Also you can kill yourself with explosions... such as hitting a powder keg with an axe! As to worlds .. i have found islands that are similar looking...but different! The game i am in at the moment has no caves on my first island..., yet one nearby is like Swiss cheese with caverns....some extending out under the sea.. The enjoyment of the game is finding things ..and solving issues ...using creativity .. As to where to get things , or how to craft, that's the learning experience of the game and part of the fun. We do not want to give away spoilers, but there are some issues..linked to bugs etc that help is needed/offered, such as with the problematic sharks that's currently being looked at by the developers. Explore and enjoy!

Not a funny screenshot....finger was not quick enough on the buttons.. Spotted circling bird ...aha an island. !!..but one bird was not circling ..it was getting bigger..and closer... Then i realized it was a shark! it was on re-entry path and belly flopped into the water in front of my ship.. I wonder where it was launched from?

You will find shark hotspots....i have located one sth west of my base and sharks spawn en masse there. However my new ship, the S.S. Ridiculous is now passing through that area unharmed, the defense barrier proving effective. The first screenshot shows what i have done, and if i ever rebuild the ship, the rear panels would be sloped, so that shark corpses can slide off. As to effectiveness, check the next two screen shots ...a total of 15 sharks tried to take a bite ..but failed... So to survive these aggressive sharks ... this is one possible solution.

    Its getting more enjoyable

I am addicted to this game..although hindered by a pathetic isp/internet connection which seem the screen freezing for 10 seconds or mire sometimes ( Australian Wet knotted string technology!) Currently i have discovered 9 islands....2 of which are polar climate and impossible to land on due to the land steepness. My base island has no caves from what i can determine.. ..and is suffering a shark plague..i encounter 10 or more in packs every time i leave my home port. Some of the scenery shots are amazing. Although i am having difficulty in obtaining some raw materials/ores ..and find strange objects hovering in the air or on the ground that have no explanation, i am persisting to see what eventuates as the game progresses. I have brought back to my base island all sorts of trees and plants, and made it a routine of replanting the seeds whenever i remove a tree, and the island is becoming quite a forest! I am also filling in depleted mines and re-vegetating them. There s is a massive rock mountain which i hope to flatten..and use the stone to build a bridge to another nearby island for when i build cars. If i don't get terminated by some bug or misfortune, this game will go on for as long as i can survive. Very enjoyable game and, a great way to spend time on a computer when the weather is miserable outdoors! Only wish is the avatars are a bit too basic ...but then ..who knows what the developers have hidden up their sleeves for the future!

  17. There were storms in Eastern Australia. today, and my ISP connection dropped out while i was in Ylands, and on my ship exploring. It happened when i had released the controls and was consulting my map. When i logged back in...i found my avatar in the ocean with the map in hand, and my ship sailing off into the distance! I Tried swimming after it only to see it outpace me and disappear .... while my health deteriorated... I was about to give up and start a new game, when i saw the ship reappear ...and it had stopped.. i continued swimming, and despite down to 2 hearts, i managed to catch up ... i was lucky! my ship had run into a Yland and beached itself For once, there were no sharks around and i recovered my ship, and after a feed and warming up, managed to reverse off the beach and continue my exploration. So if you release controls whilst the ship is under full power, and your isp connection drops out, you might end up training for the 2020 Olympic swimming team! Also if you decide to quit the game for a "break", lower the sails and drop anchor as a precaution. Hope this information is helpful.
  18. Once again encountered "porous" materials. the glass panels for my roof of my ship allow water/snow etc to penetrate. This is really no big deal , but with the latest change where you cannot light fires outdoors during rain etc, i encountered blizzard conditions while sailing, and as it was getting cold I tried to light 2 braziers on the ship deck. However the snow was passing through the roof..and the braziers acted as though they were "outside" and would not light. Also spotted a "Sharkballoon" ...?? most likely a shark suffering from gas..and floating near the summit of a mountain! I hope they do not learn to dive-bomb!

Anyone else with a shark problem?

Sharks finally get the point! Fitted a few extra spikes to the stern, and some facing to the sides. Did not take long for the sharks to try their luck ... 4 moved in ... 2 were spotted upside down drifting away in my wake . the other 2 declined the offer to try to get on board. Sailed in a loop and during map consultations and snack could hear shark noises.. but investigation revealed they were milling around behind the ship and after an inspection, swam away. Ship feels safer now Fitting a couple of braziers to keep warm ... ran into a ocean blizzard and nearly froze!

When exploring, besides having a long range weapon ( crossbow, rifle etc., and a short range weapon ( spear, sabre) always carry an axe, spade and hammer and repair kit. This can be helpful in rescuing yourself if you get caught in one of the instances of getting stuck and being unable to become unstuck. The repair kit will save you if your axe/hammer/spade breaks. I needed the spade to dig out my grounded ship ...and another time after using a ladder on an abandoned fort i became stuck in the brick wall. Several hours with a hammer i managed to break out. When jumping aboard your ship or on the front of your ship, be careful around the bow area. There is obviously an area there that contains collision scripts that allows the ship to detect objects in front of it. If your avatar hits one of these areas you end up being tossed skywards higher than the mast..and falling back to die either on the front deck ...with half your belongings on the deck and the other half with the sharks on the sea bottom. Whenever you see feathers, or a seagull or ostrich that's in a position for you harvest, gather their feathers .. they are needed for arrows and crossbow bolts. The feathers can be a hard to get resource.. and once you collect them they do not regenerate... so grab them when you see them. A mining helmet is ideal to craft asap ... you need copper glass to make a flashlight first ... but the helmet gives you hands free lighting...useful if caught outside and there's predators around and you need to carry a weapon.

Anyone else with a shark problem?

Success! Shark barrier worked! Fitted a barrier of horizontal iron spikes to stern of ship, and went for a short trip. Friendly sharks soon rushed to greet me ...as soon as i released the ships controls and looked at my map ..i heard a "thud" //turned around to see an upturned shark drifting in my wake ... Decide to have a snack and another 2 sharks came in behind my ship .. another thud and one ended up upside down and drifting away ...the other shark lost interest! This screenshot is of the stern of the S.S, Ridiculous with some more spikes added for extra security

The worry is that when the shark dies, it suddenly de-stabilizes your ship until you remove it .. and your ship cannot move until its removed! The sharks get stuck on your ship ... and it would be a solution to the issue if they did not do this. I have had them try to attack me on the shoreline and beaching themselves. You end up with all these sharks "floating" above the water around your Yland. It sure makes the game a challenge!

Anyone else with a shark problem?

S.S. Ridiculous made it home safely after a grand tour, and was docked with 4 sharks sticking out of its superstructure. I discovered not to kill off the stuck sharks in inhospitable areas or at sea, because as soon as the shark "dies", the corpse assumes weight and overbalances your ship. You then cannot move the ship until either the corpse disappears after a day, or you gut it...which is dangerous as the ship will right itself and there's the possibility you will get tossed into the ocean amidst other sharks waiting for a snack. Even so, after ridding the hull of the sharks i brought home my ship ended up in a funny angle in the dock as it righted itself after each corpse removal, and the local sharks turned up en masse to seek revenge! So the walkway at waterline around the ship does work... in a fashion. Sharks will get stuck on it or in it, but they don't seem to be able to get onto the deck and maul you. Now when building your ship, make sure the helm is not close to the stern, and any sleeping equipment is placed on the ships center and ahead of the helm. Also build a horizontal waterline walkway around the stern so the sharks cannot get too close to you. I might experiment with outward facing metal spikes on the stern walkway ... and modify the ships bow with some sort of walkway ...like a landing craft.
