With this being an alpha game, the respawn system is a no brainer. Less time finding you lost gear/ship = more time for us to play test the game

If you have found clay, make the smelter, then min up some iron ore and smelted it into ingots. Once you have the ingots you should have unlocked the forge/blacksmith station.

Gotcha, that is what I was afraid of. So if you found some in the 0.3 update then I should be good. Isn't coal used in gunpowder?
-
I have seen it in the game back when I played a few months ago but I have started a new game and I hope there isn't some bug preventing people from finding it.

I am starting to wonder if I should start over.

How about, a one-time use auto "Ylandium Defibrillator". If it is in your backpack it automatically detects when you die and starts a charging processes, once they ylandium diverts all its power to the defibrillator it then shocks you back to life. Once used the energy fires the circuits and renders the object useless. You can salvage some copper tubes and metal scraps out of it when you are done. If you happen to carry more than one defibrillator, the amount of electrical power required to shock you back to life would also render the other defibrillators and possibly other electrical items on your person useless.

The radius was just an added suggestion, it provided no other function than to let people know that they are getting close to a town center/stone. Getting rid of the radius is completely fine with me

With multiplayer coming into the game, maybe setting up claim markers to label your yland "home" would create a spawn point. The claim markers could be some sort of statute or village marker that requires a lot of resources. It could require a Chisel, some sort of hammer and either 500 stone, sandstone, or marble to create the village stone and plop it down. When you plop it down it creates a stone in the color of the resources you used to create it. It will also create a small ownership radius and prompt you to type in a name. The name is then displayed and etched into the stone and when a player enters the area they are greeted with a console message that they are entering/leaving "town name" You can only have one town marker and you must destroy the first one to create a second one.

Welcome to the forums BTW Glad to see you bought the game to support development. Remember to post any and all bugs, the devs work on bugs what almost seems daily and patches them as we find them.

I found some on the creative game and it was WAY down in a HUGE cave opening surrounded by mutated bears and such. It would seem the depth of the cave makes a difference.
-
I am so jealous! It looks like that thing fell from space and it just crashed through the cave ceiling creating a crater.

You need an Iron saw and logs. Just a tip that I have learned recently, in the creafting menu, there is an icon in the bottom left that reads "key items" make sure to click that and craft at least one of each key item. The key items help unlock recipes.

haha! I will. thanks for the tip on birds, I didn't know that.

Curious, did you "place" the bed on the ship or did you hover the bed over the floor and let it drop to the deck? If you let it drop, you may end up finding it missing in a day or two and find it hover over or in the water nearby. I had that happen to one of my flags, if you let it drop on the deck instead of placing it then it will bug out.

I can see how this can be discouraging especially when you lose everything in your inventory. Would suggest that either respawn at the nearest island on death, on in a linked bed, or at your largest structure you own but have some direction indicator pointing towards your body. This death mechanic makes me nervous, I plan on setting sail to new islands today and would hate to loose my beautiful ship.
