    Dev Diary #186 Composing Blueprints

This is one of the things I have wished for since I first started playing with editor. Perhaps another suggestion I can think of is an option in editor that only displays blueprintable entities, since so many blocks cannot be captured (yet) in a blueprint. It could save some confusion for those people just starting with making blueprints in Ylands. It could be an option when you are first creating the map. instead of choosing, flat terrain, water, archipelago, etc, you could choose blueprint builder (also a flat terrain style map, but with no game logics, and limited entity selections ....i.e. no monsters, NPCs, uncraftable items, etc.) I say this because there is a huge learning curve currently regarding what can and cannot be allowed in blueprints. Can't tell you how many times I spent hours on a composition only to find out the block style I was using wouldn't be allowed. I am a patient person though and have become proficient in knowing what is and is not allowed, but that's after several thousand hours of experimentation and reading wiki entries.

    DEV ANSWER Screen resolution question.

That's the thing. Microsoft version does full screen and it isn't stretched out, just a little blurrier....it never stretched out the screen when it was full screen but just had less pixels. The only thing that looked really different was chat, which became harder to read. At 1024x768 res a little of the hotbar was cut off at the bottom, but the rest of the game full screen with even 800x600 resolution I couldn't see too much difference ...except that it performed faster....and nothing was cut off or stretched.

    Frost Armor and Weapons

Yeah I got no idea what he's talking about either.
  5. I know they are working on a better blueprint system. Hopefully they take this suggestion to heart.
  6. I personally like the idea of them being hard to see in the distance....not so fond of the idea of not being able to see them when we are on them though.
  7. Yeah. Remember when there wasn't a map function also? You could easily feel lost on the large maps. Some of the older legacy style maps still have this, but I suppose people complained about not being able to see islands in the distance. I'd rather be able to see the island I am currently occupying than see the distant islands....I'm not the only person that thinks this way, but I suppose the devs can't please everybody. I'm still all for the idea of having craftable maps. You would have to craft a map before you could access the map feature of the game. That's for another post however. I guess the main thing that needs to be addressed with this issue is this....if you can see Island A from Island B....then it would make sense that you could see Island B from Island A....and any island you are currently occupying should be fully rendered...unless the island is so large that you cannot see the entire coastline unless you are every high in the sky....just my 2 cents. I remember the backlash when they nerfed the propeller pack that many people wanted nerfed (including me) however....so maybe asking for this change might make other people upset as well? It's not quite as drastic a change as the pack nerf...but sometimes people just get irritated at any requested changes they decide to implement.
  8. Thanks @Nikki Severin It just seems odd that it's only intended behavior for 1 island out of 5 on a map. I mean I know there's a limit on how much can be displayed and I understand that, but I would personally rather have a map with 2 or 3 large islands I can see rather than have a map with 5 or 6 islands that has 1 island with no distant views. I definitely wouldn't build any houses on those style islands because I like watching the sunsets go down beyond the distant mountains. The odd thing is it only occurs on 1 island out of the entire map. The pictures @Yo HasLEGO have posted above shows that he can see the island in the distance, but if he was on that other island in the distance he could not see the island he is standing on in the second picture even though it is the same equal distance. As a result that Island is always constantly loading when you move around on it which seems to reduce performance and game speed. Maybe as a suggestion, always have the island you are on have a distant view fully rendered so you can see the entire island you are on and have the distant islands not fully rendered until you get to them? I could even live with the idea of not seeing the other islands in the distance (or maybe just be able to see the island closest to you by a certain proximity?) if it would allow the island you are currently on to be seen in it's full beauty. The game was sort of like that in the past. Some maps would even have up to 12 islands you could not see, which made traveling to them seem to take a little longer at times but felt more realistic. (being out in open ocean without being able to see any island in the distance at some times) The map function can always help people find the islands if they feel lost. On a side note, not being able to see the islands in the distance always makes the map feel much larger than it is., and I would prefer that option.
  9. Been doing some tests to see what these vanishing islands have in common. So far it seems they all have traders on them. Specifically Andre the Blacksmith and Morten. This seems to only be the case with maps generated after the update. Don't know if this helps, but I will keep exploring to see if this is the common link between them. EDIT: After doing some tests I determined that some of the islands do this regardless if there is a trader there or not. I'll keep looking to see if I can find a common factor.
  10. @Nikki Severin This is what they are talking about. In this short vid you can see I am looking at 3 islands in the distance. One to the west, one to the northwest and one to the north. The Island closest to me is not visible. I hop in the ship and head North when this island suddenly appears in front of me, obstructing the view of the island I was looking at in the north. When I get on the island it proceeds to load in "chunks" as @JonathanHunt mentions. The 3 other islands do not load in this fashion. When I am on one end of the island I can clearly see the other end. This island however, I can only see what's right in front of me while I can still see the other 3 Islands in the distance. It's sort of weird being able to see distant islands and not being able to see the ground 30 feet in front of you.
  11. Why is this marked as resolved? It still happens.
  12. I like this idea. A gear with some fire particle effect that looks cool. 3 of my most prized possessions in the game have effects. The swod you find under the lion temple in the eastern biome, the elven staff of rejuvenation, and the sun staff. They don't do much damage but they look really cool hanging on a wall.
  13. I agree this is odd. Seeing distant islands but not being able to see the island closest to you until you are right on it. I was ignoring my map and crashed into an island that suddenly appeared in front of me making the island I was actually sailing to suddenly not visible until I flew in the air to see it.

Optimizing Editor as a Game making engine

Yeah they are pretty much done with most the work they wanted to do with editor, aside from a few tweaks here and there and occasional bug fix and adding new entities I don't see any of these suggestions happening anytime soon either.

how do I create my own blueprints?

I think maybe you are on the wrong forum for this. This is a forum about a video game called Ylands, not a place to create actual physical blueprints of real life properties.
  17. I like the idea of unlocking crafting recipes as a reward as well as getting a special item. Maybe a bust, or some cool object with particle effects, etc. I know Naru is still working on one where the reward is pots and ladels. Any type of physical reward or recipe is cool. I just played the last mystery yland they made and while I loved the challenges and the beauty of the map the reward was 15 exploration points....I spent 50 exploration points to get to it so I was expecting something else. Pay 50 for 15 isn't exactly a reward....but I do have a cool map now I can build on if I want.

    Ylands Today

I suggest you try it and find out if you like it. It's not a strict grind game, and you can play single or multiplayer. Exploration focuses on many things, crafting, survival, and of course simply exploring. You can build a small city on your map and go out adventuring every day, or you can build a small shack and do some fishing and farming. It's sort of up to you how you decide to play. I suggest to ignore the negative reviews. If I went by the reviews I may have never played my all time favorite game.
  19. I haven't tried to build in game for a few days. I'll run some tests and see.
  20. @SandyT That's a bummer. You are the first person I have known to have this issue. Makes me wonder why it's different for just you. Did you try checking the file integrity on steam? I recommend you try that first and see if it fixes the issue. @Nikki Severin do you think it may help to do that or maybe get SandyT's system specs? It seems odd it is only happening to her, which makes me think it may be something specific to her computer possibly?

    Dev Diary #188 Pictures Prioritized

@Nikki Severin Igor raises an interesting point. So far I think we have been lucky with graphically offensive images being posted. Perhaps it's because it is a small community, but as the game draws in more players this may be something to discuss. Are any steps already being taken to ensure it remains kid friendly with the thumbnail images? I'm pretty sure the answer to that question is yes, but perhaps you could elaborate? On a personal level as a parent and a gamer, I do not care if I have to wait a few days before a picture gets approved. On the business end though that particular method might require hiring someone to actually go through each picture posted.....especially if the amount of players grows.

    Fly Vehicles

I do believe they are working on that first. Everybody wants the sharks back....and I can't tell you how many people asked for pirate ship encounters.

I like this better than having to go to workshop to change the image. Will this work on compositions as well as full games?

    Fly Vehicles

Cool design. The devs have discussed flying vehicles in the game yes, and from my understanding they are coming but first they want to implement some danger in the skies. The reason the propeller pack was nerfed was because it was too overpowered and I believe they don't want planes to also be too overpowered. One thing I'd love to see is hot air baloons and zeppelins with a steampunk flair. Then again we just have to wait until the developers create some danger in the skies. (Maybe dragons pterodactyls or giant birds?) Just to keep a nice balance within the game. You can make vehicles fly in editor. Check out Naru's corner on youtube. He has a tutorial on how to make flying vehicles in the game.
