I have spent 3 real days building and consolidating my base etc... I have resisted the temptation to "rush ahead" technologically. Why? Well Yland is a game of survival, and exploration, hunting and foraging, building and crafting. Its not "my Little pony's tea party" I found an area within sight of my spawn point that is suitable for a base. I foraged for food, noted where the predators lurked and proceeded to gather resources and start crafting essentials, ie a knife, flint lighter, spear for defense, and axe and a wooden shovel. I gathered corn and flax and planted them nearby ..same with seeds from trees i harvested. My base was at the bottom of a small cliff adjacent to the ocean ..i flattened it out just above sea level, and back to the cliff, and used it as the back of my refuge. I then collected logs and made a roof to shelter under and enclosed the sides, leaving a gap to enter /exit and to place fires near to discourage wolves. All this took time. Then i explored... avoiding conflicts and gathering food and flax etc and collecting artifacts. A Warning.. there are usually predators near such items. I have now reached the stage where i have a stone fortress, and a crafting area and a storage area..... its partly open to the ocean but has gates to discourage land based predators. I have mapped the entire island and noted resource placement There's plantations nearby supplying food and flax and the tree seeds have now started to mature into a forest for future wood needs. I have harvested sand around the sea shore to make a pathway where i can re locate my base if i get caught in a storm and the glass used to make the necessary items for future advancement. So after 3 days ,..what have i achieved? well a secure base, I know there's abundant iron, coal and saltpeter, clay and also the possible location of a cave..but no opening, however i found 2 gunpowder kegs , which could be used for " instant mining" But there's no copper or sulphur or rubber... so exploration is needed. And that's where i am up to ... abundant flax plantation for sails, trees for masts etc and food to survive ...and weapons ... 3 crossbows with close to 250 bolts, and of course sabers and swords. I have found a shotgun and flintlock rifle , but limited ammunition for the rifle. So.. today to ship build , tomorrow conquer the world! Whys did i post this? to show that if you try and hurry you will become frustrated. I have only "died" once after i encountered a bear and a puma side by side, but respawned in sight of my base where i could re-arm and recover my goods. I have manually copied my map and marked on it the directions of migrating birds ...possibly 5 islands very close by, and with the floating shark issue apparently resolved i need not make a heavily reinforced boat. So patience, grasshoppers... spend time preparing before venturing out boldly... Softlee softlee....catchee monkeey!

RESOLVED [YLD-6846] [YLD-7094] sharks and porous materials
kimbuck replied to kimbuck's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
Porosity issue occurred again.. roof is made from stone panels..as is the floor.. I had dropped items on floor to make room to craft containers. It started to rain and i picked up one small stone block and ..Presto! rain rain rain. rain stopped and it dried out another rainstorm occurred 5 mins later, so out of curiosity i picked up another stone item and yes ..it happened again. It seems to be that if the object is made of the same material as the roof ...in this case stone... it happens Screenshot included. -
RESOLVED Logging off while on moving ship
kimbuck replied to GameTek's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
Gametek .. that happens when you log out or your connection fails if your ship is under sail and you do not have control of the helm. I was lucky - i swam after my ship and actually caught it when it ran aground on a shoal! Whenever you wish to log out and you are on a ship ... first of all lower sails, release the anchor, then take hold of the helm controls then save / log out. Its even safer if you can park near an island ..with the anchor down -
RESOLVED [YLD-8025] Horse + Bed
kimbuck replied to John - NEXFER's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
I was once woken up at midnight with the horse standing on my bed! ...much better than in "the godfather" ..he only got a horses head! I have also had crabs and rabbits sneak in under my bed and a seagull fly in through an open window. So.. remember to close the doors to your sleeping quarters when you go to bed. At least you don't get sharks hovering outside your windows anymore..( touch wood!) -
i only hunt them if they are threatening me where i need to gather a resource - usually i avoid them

The island i am currently on has me battling non stop with wolves ... in packs of 5 ..... i have 25 wolf pelts.! I cleared out one area, by stalking around the pack with a crossbow and gradually getting rid of the majority at a distance, but as soon as i go to claim the pelts etc... another one suddenly appears out of nowhere requiring some deft sabre work. I then search the area and its clear .. go back to base and unload the pelts etc come back to mine ore nearby and yikes .. there.s another 4 wolves in the area! So far i have tallied 25 wolves 4 pumas and 6 brown bears and i know another 2 bears are lurking as they took off after i hit them from a distance with the crossbow. No land sharks ..yet

RESOLVED Update: Ship not moving forward.
kimbuck replied to Silwercastle's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
Another thought ...maybe it was the water depth? Hull resistance is less when going backwards.... perhaps there was a shoal or something and eventually you got up enough momentum to slide over it? One ship i built was in what i though was deep water, but it was in a bay and there were shoals around the seaward side -took ages digging a channel and fighting off sharks ,but eventually got it into open water -
RESOLVED [YLD-7980] Horse Constantly Following Owner
kimbuck replied to V-Alfred's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
lucky you are not wearing a grass skirt -
RESOLVED Update: Ship not moving forward.
kimbuck replied to Silwercastle's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
Hmm the ship is not the"marie celeste" by the way? ..or the "flying Dutchman" ...hopefully Ane will have an explanation/fix for you -
RESOLVED Update: Ship not moving forward.
kimbuck replied to Silwercastle's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
perhaps its something to do with the location of the helm? it might have to be on the actual deck as well? -
RESOLVED Update: Ship not moving forward.
kimbuck replied to Silwercastle's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
Silvercastle ... is that large mast on the deck or on additions above the deck? It has to be on the actual dect to function.. -
What have you guys done to my life? Went to the shops this morning for fresh milk and bread and found myself stooping to pick up sticks and feathers in case i need to craft an arrow!

I need one right now here to quieten noisy neighbors playing rap music on full volume at 6 am

To create a rubber slab from raw rubber ..yes... sulphur is needed ( the process is actually called "vulcanising" in the real world,..... )

Looking forward to my first cannon... interested to see if it is effective against sharks, bears and those other structures. Wondering if its possible to mount a cannon on the back of a vehicle.. ( evil mind at work, here! )

RESOLVED [YLD-7943] The more you explore, the more GPU usage rises
kimbuck replied to Eric34's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
I have not tried it in Ylands, but in some other games, graphics issues and overheating can be mitigated by turning down the resolution. Also it pays at least once a year to have the dust removed from inside your PC ... ages ago i tried using a vacuum cleaner to suck dust out without opening the case and instead i dragged lint etc into the fan area of my GPU and blocking its operation... result = one dead graphics card and a rather smelly PC! The Devs here are very prompt ... if there's an issue they will soon get onto it. The games still in early access, so expect a few bugs to be crawling around in the woodwork -
I have seen several strange objects ...towers ..and cubes with faces.... and have yet to work out what they mean, do , or whatever! I broke into one cube and found some sort of generator but what you do with it ..or get from it .... i have not the faintest idea. Maybe after i have solved the wolf and bear plague nearby i will investigate more.

Ty Dustin....maybe things have changed with the latest release

Nvidia released a 'Gamers ready Driver Update' a day ago .. I had issues with the image freezing and stuttering for a while but after a driver update it was fixed. Check to see if your graphics card can meet the minimum requirements, and check internet speed..

RESOLVED [YLD-7927] Cannot Interact With any workstations or chests
kimbuck replied to Zach Mitchell's question in Bugs & Technical Issues
If all else fails, run amok with an axe! Whenever i get stuck in a tree or such, i go into a madman's frenzy with an axe ..if its wood . - or a pickaxe or hammer if its a stone/brick wall. -
I agree! its embarrassing when you accidentally punch the helm of your ship while eating ... and it gets destroyed..and you don't have materials or methods on the ship to craft a replacement!
-
No thanks ! I recall waking up and finding 6 of them wedged into the sides and roof of my ship! I have even seen sharks in the air in "mating positions!". My ultimate goal is to fit a cannon to my ship and shoot them down Since the update and fixes, i have not had any drop from the sky onto my ships deck ...

It is possible during bad weather to sail between islands and not spot them! ...a zig zag course and a constant lookout for birds is a good idea
-
you can put a bed on a larger ship and sleep. But a word of warning ...do not leave the ship in sail with the anchor up and you not holding the helm when you log out.... you could find yourself swimming after your ship when you re-log! I was reading my map when my isp went down ... when i returned i was i the water and my ship a dot on the horizon...i swam after it and luckily the ship ran into an island and stopped and i recovered it, but was down to 1 and a half hearts of health ..and starving! I have since discovered that if you leave a moving ship, it will eventually stop of its own accord after a period of time ... Just keep swimming and pray the sharks have had their dinner already

You can also find smaller deposits on some temperate islands, or even inside caves , but the desert islands seem the best choice, as A3_Nelle suggests .. they are also the best places for sulphur to appear on the surface. The wiki is a work in progress.. priority seems to be to get the game running smoothly first before they add the bells and whistles
