Terrain modification on mobile

Installed the game on android and can't dig. I pick up a pickaxe or a shovel and show a warning: "Changing the terrain is not allowed." Maybe someone knows what the problem is?

Are you playing on Exploration mode?

Certain maps have interactable terrain while others, do not.

I play in exploration mode, but I can’t dig in sandbox mode either, on different islands, I tried everything and I can’t dig anywhere. Shows the same message

Unfortunately, to my best knowledge, it is impossible to modify the terrain in any way in the current mobile version of Ylands. 

So not a bug but a missing feature.

How then in the mobile version to get sand for craft?

I believe you can get sandstone chunks from caves in the arid biom, then break those in your inventory to get sand.

I can't think of another way on mobile, other than maybe an NPC merchant.

Nice! You got some

Select the sandstone chunk in your inventory.  Click the eye icon to inspect the item and select break. It should give you 5 sand per chunk.

Tree stumps drop dirt and palm trees on beaches drop sand when destroyed, so you could farm these as renewable resource.
