RESOLVED [YLD-13359] Hit radius

Question

I know the hit radius for "battle" and hitting trees/rocks has got a boost with the new update but also with that came a huge hit radius, you can actually chop down 2 trees close to each other or hit unwanted objects close to the area you are hitting on.

Picture 1: i was cutting down a young tree and it also took down a small bush quit far away.

Picture 2: while hitting a rock i also started hitting the tree with my hamer.

I understand your arguments about tools/weapons slay feature. As you're coming from ARMA community (which appears to be a COMBAT game), you sure have the experience of such request in a COMBAT game. I've tried to play some games as Life is Feudal, which was not clearly shown as a sandbox, but some survival game which was slightly evolving to a multiplayer RPG, where combat finally took over. And I left the game.

Should the debate turn to "Ylands, sandbox or multiplayer survival?", I would most regretfully choose the same: Leave definitely. I will probably not wait until some advanced modder removes the things that I don't like in the game if the destiny of the game is to turn to multiplayer combat functionnalities.

However, this is not the game that I bought. And there were no clear signs that Ylands was heading in this direction. Were they?

Ylands will always be a (open) sandbox game, you can play it how ever you want and the options to create a game type are in my eyes limitless: SP/COOP (friendly) survival, Player VS Player, Team VS Team: all options are open for how YOU want to play the game.

The weapon/tool slay feature will be used how you use it I guess, I personally don't have issue with it besides the damage range being a bit to wide.

I can agree that with modding it can take ages to get a mod like that, but like being said before: Ylands it is Early Acces and it states that things can changes during EA development, this is 1 of the risks you take with buying a early Acces Game (dark side of early acces).

I would rather say about this technical issue that it simply shouldn't happen. The underlying question is: "Is an axe a tool for cutting wood or a weapon?" By the way, other tools such as pickaxes and hammers don't have a hit radius in the new version.

We have a wild-range choice with weapons, while we have only the axe to cut trees (though weapons will cut them too, which is a pain when aiming at the animal just beside). An evident and quite fast solution would certainly be to return the axe to the tools universe, and to clearly consider apart tools and weapons for their impacts and uses.

@Salvelinus They were using a hammer in picture 2 so that must have a hit radius also.

The current hit radius for non-combat operations is a nonsense. I honestly have no idea how that ever got past testing.

ps: You can also use a saw to cut down trees ;)

@Salvelinus @TheSparkPlug

I always use a saw wenn I get the chance to create 1, if you look at my inventory you could have seen that I am still using all the "rock/wood" based tools because I don't  have iron tools yet (so also no saw) I just started a new explorer game as fresh spawn after the 0.11 update(thsee screenshots were taken verry shortly after 0.11 release).

And for the tree I used a (stone)axe and for the big rock I used a (stone) hamer and both had a few hits far from the "normal" hit radius.

Guess I was wrong about the axe being the only tool to cut trees. My mistake.

However, could we conclude that combos for an axe is a bad idea? We seem to agree on this point, as far as I can see.

Agree a axe is not a weapon of choice for a fight (especially with the new combo animations) but like in real life it can be a tool that can be used as weapon to fight of enemies or predators to save your own life.

Right, in real life axe can be a weapon. As many object considered not being ones. Pen, sticks, ropes, chains, or almost whatever.

Should we ask for combo-shots with pens? While not being able to have maps?

I try to make fun with it, but I'm really missing my favorite game and can't really enjoy it without 1st person view. Maybe I'm wrong, but I hold responsible for this the new combat functionnalities (combo-shots in particular), which WERE NOT a priority in a sandbox, while missing 1st person view IS a priority. I'm really disappointed that Bohemia Interactive still maintains these "improvements" with such drawbacks.

@Salvelinus the 1st person cam was mentioned as broken by the dev team and being worked on, the command is a "work around" for a fix for now.

And personal wishes are always a problem, some people want "special things" and as I am coming from the ARMA community I know all about this, the Ylands team has to look further than all personal wishes and make a list of what is possible and if they want it in game as improvement, the feedback for the new weapon slay animations/features has been on that list for a few years now I believe.

Who knows maybe  i a near future with scripting someone will think the same thing and create a new script on certain weapons/tools to not have the weapon slay feature ?

@Salvelinus first person is back and has been since the patch.  /fpscam enable    /fpscam disable

If I were some first-days alpha tester running some free-for-demo test version, I could consider a console command as a soon-to-be fixed issue, while still requiring some access ergonomy.

I admit Ylands is still an early access, but 1st person mode has worked awesomely since I bought the game and it has disappeared. Replacing the inactive shortcut key by its console command cannot be considered as a fixed issue, while it was said (on Steam) that this command was still to be used at player's risk, as it could entail bugs. The reason why the shortcut key was deactivated, I suppose.

As I am not an advanced user, I consider I don't have to use a console command while the command has been deactivated, even if the console command is still available. My solution remains to consider it is not fixed yet, and therefore I should not play as far as I can't make fun without 1st person mode.

This is not the main subject of the post, back to the main subject: Hit radius.

MS paint pic, to get the problem recognized by the dev team!

A3_Melle Thank you for explaining this in a way that gets some recognition to the problem!

Quick workaround to felling  trees and  removing stumps ...also   stone lumps ...     .... use a revolver!    -   :D 6 shots will fell a tree..another 4 to 6  will  cause it to break into logs......  and   4   will remove  the stump!B|

Also 4  to  6  shots  will  turn a lump of  rock into  a pick-able   stone.     Not  the best way to  remove  things,  but more  accurate and you can avoid  hitting   other things.

Besides ...its  also fun   :D
