zarwil 393 Posted December 31, 2020 @spiritchaser28 Looking forward to it ? @Jstuts If you want to place items outside of bounds you first have to place them somewhere inside the bounds of the ship, and then move them to their correct position after. In general, it's easier to modify a ship if it is not actually tied to a ship component. To untie a "ship" from it's ship component you need to: 1. Select the ship part and make sure it's set to construction mode. Place two simple building blocks (I use 2x1x1 wooden beams) exactly next to eachother somewhere on the deck of the ship. Paint one of them red, and the other green. 2. Select everything attached to the ship (including the ship part) by moving back a bit and drag-selecting the entire ship. This should mark every individual item. 3. Whilst everything is still "selected", move inside the exterior hull and unselect the ship part. Also unselect the one of the painted blocks from step 1. Doesn't matter which. The two painted blocks will be used to re-align everything once you want to reconnect the ship again. 4. Press CTRL + X, to cut out the selected items from the ship part. 5. Paste the copied parts on the ground, then move them up a bit so you can see what you're working with. At this point you can do whatever you like without worrying about the ship part fudging your plans. 6. When you've done your edits, copy everything once again, but make sure the painted block is the actively selected items, such that everything moves in relation to it. 7. Paste everything straight onto the old ship part. Use the editor tools to align the painted blocks. When they are in the exact same position relative to each other as in step 1, the hull will be properly aligned.
ocnoglittle 760 Posted December 31, 2020 Don't you have to have the ship at position (0,0,0) and rotation (0,0,0) to paste like that?

I should have specified to use paste by right-clicking the ship part and selecting "paste" in the window that pops up. Also, once you paste onto the ship, you have to keep the selection of the items and move them together until they are correctly lined up.
spiritchaser28 920 Posted December 31, 2020 @zarwil as Promised. I took your small yacht, and removed the sails and dropped some ylandium engines and a charging station in the place you had storage chests. Changed up the colors some and added lights. also moved the wheel and anchor above. in rough weather the engines sometimes stall so I am thinking of raising them a bit and building a little frame around the doors to allow them to remain hidden. or I just might use it as is and enjoy the rough weather stalling like a real sea captain LOL

Jstuts 11 Posted January 3, 2021 @zarwil, I want to thank you for the detailed steps you outlined to make changes in a ship, in editor. I did, in my own way, make the changes I wanted to make in the ship you composed and I love using it now! I cannot honestly claim that I really understand everything you outlined, but I think that is my failing, not yours. I'll probably understand it eventually. It's difficult to describe stuff like this. A huge part of being skilled in the editor is being able to develop various building methods and workflows. They can be quite laborious. zarwil 393 Posted January 14, 2022 Yep it's probably time for an update. I've been working on a different type of hull-design for a while now, and there's a lot to show. As usual, not much is "finished" lol. I'm pretty sure everything on thís list is constructed with "buildable" materials in explore, so they should work as blueprints eventually. 1. First, If you didn't see it, I recreated the Dreadful Wale and posted it in a separate thread. Huge amount of time and effort went in to it. Happy with the results! 2. My current exploration vessel. Cute ship with plenty of space and storage. I'm sick to death of it now, so I might sell it off (for in-game gold) whenever I build a replacement. 3. A tiny exploration sail boat, currently in use by my gf. 4. A couple of military vehicles for explore. Very basic design. I wanted something to use in PVP, so I tried to keep the profile small. Works great for two players, one to steer and one to man the cannons. There's one cannon in each direction, so you can move between them depending on the situation. When in 3rd person view, the camera is placed above the hull / behind the cannon, while the player is still safe inside the ship. Gives you a great view. First person works too ofc. ' I never built one in explore so I don't know how well they operate in practice, although I should probably add some more storage. 5. This is actually an older design, but I never fully showed it here. Small ships, very detailed design. Experimented with some much smoother hulls (as you can see from the aft, around the rudder). Not intended for explore. 6. A continuation of the techniques used in the previous ship. I tried to make a really small exploration ship using the junk, while trying to make the hull buttery smooth. 7. Another military vehicle, trying to keep a similar design language to the Dreadful Wale. 8. Large exploration vessel. Shorter in length, but much greater interior volume than the Dreadful Wale. (Although it's probably much too big to use in practice due to lag.) 9. Steam trawler (drifter). Inspired by early 20th century British fishing vessels. Really happy with how the stern turned out, it was difficult to make. 10. Another small sailing vessel (slightly more modern this time), using some of the techniques learned with the latter projects shown above. That's pretty much it. There's been plenty of experimental ships made in-between these, but there's no real point in showing them. I've also been building a lot of medieval architecture for my explore worlds (became obsessed after visiting France...). It's not really related to this thread, but I might as well show a glimpse. It's so difficult to segment things into digestible chunks which can be made into blueprints... That's it for now.
spiritchaser28 920 Posted January 14, 2022 And all this time I thought you only built ships. Wow those medieval builds are fantastic!

Very happy to hear ^^ I've always built structures, just nothing special worth posting here. Many players have already posted structures that are leagues ahead of anything I've been capable of. Might as well stick to my lane, you know Edited January 15, 2022 by zarwil

spiritchaser28 920 Posted January 15, 2022 (edited) Sounds fun Both are intriguing designs. Not sure What I would do to number 4 aside from extra storage like you mentioned. I quite like the color scheme you chose for number 4 so I doubt I would do anything to that. The low profile ships can be a challenge when it comes to storage, but I do have some methods I might try to add a few thousand slots (Without changing the outward appearance much hehe.) # 3 and 10 also look like they would be a fun challenge. I love working on the smaller ships. It's fun trying to strike a balance between comfort and function in the smaller designs. # 2 looks quite comfortable and there is so much extra room I think I may have a way to incorporate every workstation into the design without affecting the comfort or space. I'm super curious about #10 interior space do you have any inside pics? Interior design is my jam LOL Edited January 15, 2022 by spiritchaser28

Deadeye_Rob 908 Posted January 20, 2022 I think you don’t give yourself enough credit for building structures over ships Zarwil. That medieval stable is gorgeous, and far beyond my abilities! 1

I think every player looks back at their old buildings and deems them to be considerably worse after a few years of practice. Your current buildings show you have spent a ton of time learning the tricks of the trade. Edited January 20, 2022 by spiritchaser28
